Is it worth installing centos 7 for a few months or is beta stable enough for almalinux 8?
I am running Alma 8 for months now on my big board without any issues. @eva2000 wants to upgrade the 130 beta to the new default installer also. I suggest using Alma or Rocky now to prevent an cumbersome upgrade later.
Centos 7 reaches EOL on June 30th 2024. Is there a poll showing how many people switched their production sites already or rather wait it out?
Yeah, I'm still on CentOS 7. My current plan is to move to a new Alma server before it goes EOL in the next few months.
Personal preference - Almalinux's experience with developing CloudLinux and Kernel Care are factors as well. Yeah 130.00beta01 will eventually have some tools for this too via centmin.sh menu option 21 revisions - still not that user friendly on restore side (working on that). centmin.sh menu option 21 is meant to be as close to as a clean install. You setup new EL8/EL9 Centmin Mod server as destination and centmin.sh menu option 21 allows various ways of backing up CentOS 7 server and migrating data to the new EL8/EL9 freshly installed Centmin Mod server then there are some scripts + manual steps to restore that backed up data to EL8/EL9 Centmin Mod server. Though that's why I personally like AlmaLinux not being tied to RHEL allows it to do things and offer up packages that you usually wouldn't have available. That is exactly what Oracle Linux offers. (RH)EL 1:1 clone with as extra packages; its own edition of the Kernel, PHP, MySQL etc. Upstream of the same software is and remains available as well. AlmaLinux offers the same kind of extra's that is fine. The problem is the foundation of AlmaLinux and that is CentOS Stream. Stream which is RHEL beta software: "CentOS Stream may seem like a natural choice to replace CentOS Linux, but it is not designed for production use."
