Most AMD Ryzen 7 reviews will be on Windows. But Patrick from ServeTheHome.com has Linux benchmarks for us - AMD Ryzen 7 1700X Linux Benchmarks - Fast and Cheap

Note STH used Ubuntu 14 with GCC 4.4.2 while AMD Ryzen 7 had alot of optimisations added to GCC 4.10+

Yes AMD server version of Ryzen is called Naples with up to 32 cpu cores per processor models

Hopefully, OVH will add a few of those for their gaming servers. Single threaded is off the chart and I'm sure they'd love the power savings. Of course, how many mobos are going to support the new chip? I don't think a single OVH server is using an AMD chip... unless the server is old.

Yeah fingers crossed OVH does. Just need for OSes to use newer Kernels though. AMD Ryzen needs Linux 4.10+ kernels for best performance.

At the AMD Tech Day I had the opportunity to get some hands-on time with AMD Ryzen and a few different systems. Thanks to a wonderful Linux-Bench version on a USB 3.0 stick, I was able to get numbers to publish. It was a painful process and required several reboots until I got it all working. After hammering the four test configurations we have, I came to the conclusion that the actual issue was not a pre-retail chip. Instead, it is just running AMD Ryzen using the current version of Ubuntu. We had issues with Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS (the current latest) that is the STH standard. We also had issues with Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS. These were present in both Desktop and Server versions of Ubuntu. That is enough different configurations where we are now satisfied that it is not a fluke, but instead an issue with AMD Ryzen and older kernels.

CentOS 6 and 7 have their own way of getting 4.10 mainline kernels via elrepo yum repo provided you are on non-OpenVZ VSP like Xen, KVM, VMware or bare metal dedicated servers. OpenVZ doesn't support using own Linux kernel as it uses OpenVZ host node's kernel.

All three of the launch AMD Ryzen 7 parts are very close in performance. We previously posted the AMD Ryzen 7 1700X benchmarks based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS which uses an older kernel. Today we have linux benchmarks of the AMD Ryzen 7 1700, and this is the chip you should buy. We did want to point to our guide on installing Linux kernel 4.10.1 for Ubuntu which is realistically the kernel you need to be using. Even if you need to use Ubuntu 14.04 or 16.04 LTS versions, if you are using Rzyen using older kernels will likely cause crashing. The AMD Ryzen 7 1700 is an extremely interesting part. It has the same 8 cores/ 16 threads as the higher-end CPUs. It can be overclocked with little effort. It also has a much lower TDP at 65W.

Test Configuration
For our Ubuntu 14.04 with kernel 4.10.1 benchmarks we standardized on a very simple platform. Note, we are going to include the Ryzen 7 1700X with kernel 4.10.1 and this platform in our results.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 1700

Motherboard: ASUS Prime B350-Plus

RAM: 16GB (4 x 16GB) DDR4-2666

Boot Media: Intel DC S3710 400GB

Operating System: Ubuntu 14.04 LTS with Kernel 4.10.1

Unfortunately, AMD did not highlight Linux benchmarks for the Ryzen launch and was not keen to have the new chips tested with Linux

The AM4 Socket
One of the common perceptions of AMD is that they like to keep a socket for many, many generations. Both AM3/3+ and FM2/2+ have existed for at least three generations of CPUs a piece, and the main thinking here is that backwards compatibility was important. Because Ryzen requires DDR4 memory, enables PCIe, and perhaps some other magic, more pins and a new socket is needed, breaking that trend. The new CPU uses 1331 pins, up from the 939-941 we’ve had before, but essentially in the same dimensions, meaning that the pins are smaller and now easier to break / accidentally smear thermal grease into and not be able to get it out.

The socket then changes to accommodate the pins, however AMD is still using a zero insertion force (ZIF) method for contact. Which means every so often, if I have a good seal between the CPU and the heatsink, removing the heatsink also removes the CPU – not a critical issue, but not the preferred state of things.

Nice thread. WSI said they would offer it . ( wholesaleinternet)
too bad that they are "pricey" in terms of bandwidth ( need bulk) while their mix ( network and facility) are not prem.
Also their disks usually are not precisely with small time of usage ( I dont care give the nature of what I do )
Also I believe their support is made of some remote guys ( given their latency while doing mtrs and such to the servers)..
If they were in the same DC they would not have 20+ msecs
Asked if I could pool the 1gig U bandwidth with servers I'd purchase from them and they just said not.
Just another reason to keep growing in number in Hetzner.

Not sure if I've mentioned it but WSI says they are working on an in house 50gbits scrubbing and added Hibernia . They had cogent alone for ipv4. Odd thing is that it doesnt show up Hibernia.

IIRC they use he.net for v6

Today I got around to running a very heavy/demanding, very real-world workload on the AMD Ryzen 7 1800X that I've been meaning to test with this Zen CPU.

The workload I've been running on the Ryzen 7 1800X the past few hours is that of Open Porous Media, the open-source OPM project is a growing initiative around research and simulators for modeling and simulation of porous media processes, including a reservoir simulator and permeability upscaling. This sort of workload has relevance in areas like oil and natural gas industries.
