Ooh finally maybe Intel has some competition from AMD again AMD Ryzen 7 1700X 8 Core CPU Benchmarks Leaked - Thousand Dollar Performer For $389 !

Ryzen 7 1700X with 8 cores and 16 cpu threads 3.4-3.8Ghz $389 definitely looks good compared to Intel Xeon E3-1200 v1-5 line ups given there's 16 cpu threads - double what Intel has to offer !

Ryzen is so far ahead of AMD’s last generation FX 8350 Piledriver chip, it’s almost dizzying. It puts into perspective the enormity of the challenge that the company’s engineering team had to overcome.

Bringing this to a close we have to remark on one of Ryzen’s surprising strong suits and that’s its efficiency. Despite having double the cores, threads and cache of the 7700K it somehow manages to only dissipate 95 watts of power. Granted the 7700K is clocked significantly higher but all of AMD’s 8 core Ryzen chips that we’ve seen to date manage to come in at 45 watts and even up to 75 watts below their most directly comparable Intel counterpart, the 140W eight core i7-6900K. It will be very interesting to see if Ryzen chips will live up to their impressive TDP ratings in real-world independent testing.

The Zen CPU core in Naples will provide the same performance benefits as in the Ryzen chips. AMD claims a 40 percent improvement in instructions per cycle, an important metric to measure CPU performance, compared to the company's previous Excavator architecture.

More data is moving into the cloud, which is putting more strain on servers in data centers. More cores will add processing power to help servers respond quickly to search requests, recognize images, and process uploaded videos faster. A server with a single CPU will be able to do as much as a current two-socket server, Norrod said.

AMD has a big challenge with 32-core Naples. Companies like Google, Facebook and Amazon are building mega data centers with servers based on Xeon. Those companies have software stacks tuned closely to the processing, I/O, power, and throughput specifications of Xeon chips, and it could be tough for AMD to break into large accounts.

But AMD's Naples is the first legitimate x86 challenger to Xeon in years. Google, Facebook, and Amazon could use AMD's chip as leverage to get better chip prices from Intel. Xeon chips are expensive, and the margins make them highly profitable products for Intel.

Due in Q2, 2017 apparently Early AMD Zen Server CPU and Motherboard Details: Codename ‘Naples’, 32-cores, Dual Socket Platforms, Q2 2017

The 32-core CPU, codename Naples, will feature simultaneous multithreading similar to the desktop platform we wrote about earlier, allowing for 64 threads per processor. Thus, in a dual socket system, up to 128 threads will be available. These development systems are currently in the hands of select AMD partners for qualification and development.

AMD was clear that we will expect to hear more over the coming months (SuperComputing 2016 is in November 2016, International SuperComputing is in June 2017) with a current schedule to start providing servers in Q2 2017.

AMD Ryzen 7 cpus can be pre-ordered now AMD Ryzen 7 Parts Available for Pre-Order Now!. I haven't used desktop in ages as I use my Samsung ATIV Book 8 laptop now. So AMD Ryzen 7 might look like a good desktop build for more cpu cores i.e. I use virtualbox extensively so more cpu cores the better

Initial Details on the AMD Ryzen 7 CPUs
A few features are going to be common on the AMD Ryzen 7 platform. First, each SKU will be a 8 core/ 16 thread part. AMD is specifically targeting the high-end desktop market that is dominated by gaming and overclocking with its first Zen architecture release. All three of the Ryzen 7 parts released will have the ability to overclock via multipliers but are binned for speed at the factory.

The AMD Ryzen 7 1800X is the top-end SKU that the company is targeting at Intel’s high-end Core i7-6900K ($1000+ CPU.) AMD is being extremely aggressive on pricing and is targeting a suggested retail price of $499, or about half of its Intel 8 core / 16 thread Broadwell-E competitor. Clocks are in the 3.6GHz all core base to 4.0GHz turbo range. TDP is listed at 95W.

In the middle of the range, the AMD Ryzen 7 1700X has 3.4GHz all core base clock to 3.8GHz turbo. AMD is targeting a $399 price point for this part with a listed TDP of 95W. This SKU is about saving 5-10% on clock speeds and 20% in terms of CPU cost.

Perhaps equally as interesting, the AMD Ryzen 7 1700 is a 65W TDP part that has a 3.0GHz base clock and a 3.7GHz turbo clock. This is one part you should have your eye on. Although it has the highest boost range, the lower clocks mean it is expected to have a significantly lower TDP. This was compared to the Intel Core i7-7700K which offers higher single-core speeds but half the core count (4 v. 8 for AMD.)

At the AMD event, the company spent a lot of time focused on drastically improved IPC (they claim 52%) and the fact that they are selling the lowest cost 8 core/ 16 thread parts on the market. The AMD Ryzen 7 1700 at 65W TDP with its eight cores is extremely compelling as it can flat out provide twice as many cores and more L3 cache than Intel has in its Core i7 and the Xeon E3 line.

AMD has already baited customers with an option to pre-purchase its three top-of-the-line chips, with the most expensive model costing $500 and performing on a par with a similar Intel processor costing over $1,000. That has pushed Intel to lower its prices before the Ryzen family arrives with a bang.

The price cuts have already shown up on Microcenter, revealing reductions ranging from $15 to $300. For instance, the Intel Core i7-6950X chip originally sold for $1,900, but is now $300 less, representing the biggest price reduction so far. Currently, AMD’s $400 Ryzen 7 1700X desktop processor is the second-best-selling CPU on Amazon, slotting behind the $340 Intel Core i7-7700K and ahead of the $240 Intel Core i5-7600K. AMD’s $330 Ryzen 7 1700 chip resides in seventh place while the $500 Ryzen 7 1800X falls into thirteenth place. AMD Ryezen and Linux 4.10 Kernel AMD's Ryzen Will Really Like A Newer Linux Kernel - Phoronix

AMD's Ryzen CPU is finally shipping in a few days! If you are planning to be an early adopter of AMD Ryzen processors, you will really want to be running a newer Linux kernel release for proper support and performance.

I haven't received any communication from AMD about any review samples or the like, so I am not under NDA for the upcoming AMD Ryzen launch on 2 March... And thankfully received some information from a reliable source this weekend regarding Ryzen support Linux requirements. So here they are.

I am told that if using Ubuntu 16.10 / Ubuntu 16.04.2 as a base state for AMD Ryzen, users should generally be okay. In other words, you won't get a kernel oops on boot or anything dramatic like that but could be missing some functionality. However, you will really be better off with a newer Linux kernel.

As I wrote about back in December, Linux 4.10 landed a lot of Zen/Ryzen code. So with Linux 4.10 looks to be -- and reaffirmed by this trusted confidant -- a good point for AMD Ryzen testing and usage. So far in the Linux 4.11 cycle we haven't seen anything Ryzen-specific appear to come through.

But if you don't feel comfortable moving to the recently-released Linux 4.10 or your distribution hasn't yet offered you an easy upgrade path, an alternative is to be running at least Linux 4.9.10.

So that rules OpenVZ VPS as they use host node's Linux Kernel and you can't change Linux kernels like you can on KVM, VMWare, Xen and bare metal dedicated servers
