    Amen to that ))

Another great thing at Linode btw is that you can scale your vps very quick in either direction comparing to Vultr where you can't downsize unless you spin a new VPS and in a lot of cases you can't upgrade due to a lack of space on a host.

    Quick question:

What are the best ways to monitor CPU steal? In other words what are the sure ways to detect noisy neighbor(s)? (if there are ways)

I wish Linode offered a flexibility like that: Screenshot
Would make things so much easier.

Screenshot is taken from 1and1 hosting

Apparently the Linode London Gold CPU server was so new and freshly unpacked that certain distro images were not in stock.
    Fixed by now.
Difficult to say and difficult to establish because you can not look at the host itself.
Every low end provider does overselling.

It is only the question of how far one and the other goes.
Without overselling you only could run around 40 single core,
VPS servers at 5$ per month per host (Dual CPU - 2 x 20 cores).

That is far too little and not profitable.
Given that only a single Linode CPU costs about $3000.
So that's around $6000 only for the CPU's per host.

There are however a few landmarks:
When you monitor your system well, you can come up with facts and report this to the provider. For example to force a transfer to another host.

top and sar stats i.e. Linode - Thank goodness for glances - cpu steal

as to 6 cpu core $60/m plan the maths might make sense for newer E5-2697v4 or Xeon Gold 6148

    Take
    • old Dual Xeon E5-2680v2 with 2x 10C/20T = 20 cores and 40 threads dividing into 8GB 4CPU plans would be 40 threads/4 = 10x US$40/m plans = US$400/month if not oversold
    • Dual Xeon E5-2697v4 with 2x 18C/36T = 36 cores and 72 threads divided by 8GB 4CPU plans would be 72/4 = 18x US$40/m plans = US$720/month or divided by 6CPU plan = 72/6 = 12x US$60/month = US$720/month
    • Dual Xeon Gold 6148 with 2x 20C/40T = 40 cores and 80 threads divided by 8GB 4CPU plans = 80/4 = 20x US$40/month = US$800/month or divided by a 6CPU plan = 80/6 = 15x US$60/month = US$900/month
yes I am still dreaming :)

I landed on one in Newark! From what I can tell in this specific location, if the host ID starts with h13**-cjj1 it will most likely have the newer Gold 6148 CPU.

@jlchandler nice thanks for sharing :)

folks should continue Linode cpu discussion at Linode - Guessing Linode's next server cpus ? :)
