Is it already possible to test CMM with Alma 8.5?

Technically yes but it's privately tested by me right now. Not ready for other users to test yet while I'm am still testing and figuring things out and if they work or not. It's just not ready for public testing as yet.

I hope eva2000 is not gonna hate me for this.. but you can test that branch from github, if you know how to debug / alter it. I was just curious of the progress, and while I didn't get it to install everything completely, I was still very positively surprised of how close to "finished product" it is.

Centmin Mod EL8 branch needs a separate installer to fully support it right now. You wouldn't be able to use the 123.09beta01's installers or even installers in the EL8 branch right now. Separate installer is private for now :)

Interesting to see what performance gains (or not) are achievable with Alma vs CentOS 7...

What I heard from our Red Hat account manager is that:
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 is intended to be released in the summer/fall of this year.

Since AlmaLinux has close ties to CentOS/Red Hat developers.
Logical that they started a AlmaLinux 9 beta version as of yesterday,
as a first test towards the final version.
After all, they also know that the final release is coming.

BTW the first Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 beta came November of last year.

What about skipping Enterprise Linux 8 (because it isn't there yet after years) support for Centmin Mod and immediately switch to Enterprise Linux 9?
Because your time is limited. EPEL 9 is on its way since last year.

Depending on what hardware you use. (Version 8 supports much more powerful and new hardware). Where version 7 just doesn't even run on brand new servers.

With new hardware you will see big differences. But with the same hardware. Not that much. The key components (Nginx, PHP etc) of Centmin Mod are custom compiled and already uses the latest compiler software + optimization patches for optimal results.

There is little to gain in the latter area. But damn that hardware.
The new Centmin Mod will fly on an Epyc Milan cluster. I know that almost for sure.

    +1 for this EL9 suggestion.
By the time CentMinMod is ready, EL8 will be almost out of the main phase and there will be no new hardware support.

In other words, we'll have the problem again pretty soon, just like now.
That CentMinMod does not run on new hardware.

EL9 not there yet 3rd party repos are no where near ready for testing. MariaDB official repo hasn't even got a EL9 build yet i.e. https://mariadb.org/download/?t=repo-config. For Centmin Mod and EL9 probably will opt to default to MariaDB 10.6 which is a LTS release, hopefully by then MariaDB sorted out their optimizer issues in MariaDB 10.4+ too. FYI, EL9+ defaults to MariaDB 10.5.x for native OS versions. But Centmin Mod uses official MariaDB YUM repos.

But I am already laying some of the El9 ground work with EL8 development to make it easier. Support means adding compatibility but also doing testing. The latter part is more time consuming.

Package releases included in EL are always LTS as written on the support cycle at Red Hat. If using official MariaDB YUM repos. History shows that Mariadb is very fast with its support after the release of an operating system. Both EL and Ubuntu LTS. Almost immediately after a new operating system is released.

Of course, testing is one of the most time-consuming tasks. That is why it might be smart to make the choice to step on the EL 9 boat right away. Because, as stated before, you are having a hard time with available time.

And if I may be so bold. If there is already a limitation at Centminmod. It's the hardware support.

Partly for this reason, the step to EL9 immediately is not so bad anyway. In my opinion.

Yeah as always though it's a waiting game still.

End of the day though, I created Centmin Mod for my own usage and I intend to use EL8 sooner than EL9, so EL8 support and testing is a must anyway :D
