    Just out of curiosity which alternatives you are going choose/already chosen for next OS, to gauge what this community is leaning towards.

    Right now AlmaLinux has a clear lead for me and a lot of folks I'd say.

    In my opinion, this is a tricky one.
    When it comes to software, these distros are all just fine.

    When it comes to the management behind the distro, there are currently some differences.

    Rocky Linux is owned and controlled by one person only: Gregory Kurtzer.
    I don't know if it's convenient when the absolute power is with one person only.
    CentOS almost went down with a similar case in the past. Where the same Gregory Kurtzer was involved as founder.

    CloudLinux has created a foundation to ensure independence for AlmaLinux.
    But as indicated in the topic below. There are many CloudLinux related (paid) employees involved. And CloudLinux has invested quite a bit of money in AlmaLinux.

    What if CloudLinux withdraws from AlmaLinux? AlmaLinux does not seem self-sufficient without the provision of investments and staff by CloudLinux.

    On Oracle Linux. Oracle seems focused on monetizing.
    Many programmers and system administrators hate Oracle, down to the bone.
    Many in the industry still feel that Oracle has been infamous for bait and switch tactics.

    Reesuming. If I had to choose now, today. I currently have a slight preference for AlmaLinux.
    But as it is so often in software lala-land. This can change in a day.

    I made a list of the pros and cons (draft, things that come to mind first),
    when choosing a CentOS 8 or Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 (RHEL) replacement.
    Feel free to add points. That topic is a rolling topic.

    Yeah, this has come up in various reading I have done recently too. But ultimately vested interest in a project is a good thing in my book - it keeps you motivated to develop and grow a product. So benefiting financially or non-financially from spearheading a project shouldn't be seen as a bad thing but rather a good thing.

    A lot of pressure is coming now to find a good server with Centos 7 most from OVH :(

    Hope that we can have soon a first possible setup for Centminmod for Alma/Rocky....

    Yup. Server availability, compatible with EL7 is starting to be a problem.
    Not just at OVH.

    Partly because of the chip shortages (corona, war ukrania).
    Is it difficult to obtain good servers.
    Both certified ditto non-certified hardware.

    Indeed - unfortunately most of my time is taken up with paid client work eating into my free time. Which OVH servers you tried that don't support CentOS 7? They removed the OS listing pages but IIRC Intel Xeon E3-23xx Rocket Lakes did support CentOS 7. Other web hosts have listed the same. But I guess it's a gamble depending on web host and unless web host lists it's supported.

    Though depends on where you look for new servers. Hivelocity has CentOS 7 servers i.e. Intel Xeon E-2388 8C/16T Rocket Lake with 32GB, 2x1TB NVMe SSD, 20TB and DDOS protection and 1Gbps network with CentOS 7.x and KernelCare for US$248-292/month (use my agent referral code = GL9316 ;) ) Though similar server at OVH Canada with 2x 960GB NVMe SSD and without KernelCare is cheaper ~AUD$183/month without 12 month commitment.

    But looks like some OVH servers only offer control panels and no plain OS distro choices ?

    OVH Advance-2 Gen2 E3-2388 server choices for distros are limited

    Cost of OVH Advance 2 gen2 blows out to US$310/month as you can only choose RHEL paid license +US$100/month and only select an application from the list i.e. cPanel at +US$41/month.

    Looks like OS supported is listed on OVH's new compare page when you compare servers Bare Metal comparison but at least with Advance 2 gen2 you can't select non-paid OS at order time from above screenshot?!

    CentOS 7 supported for OVH Advance2 gen2 and Advance 4 gen 2
