I've seen some sites that have a widget that collects email addresses. I want to do the same on my Wordpress site and only email in bulk for a certain category or a custom email.

I'd also like for this to be free.

Is such a plugin or plugin/service available? I think the common one is MailChimp, but I'd really prefer not to pay since it's solely to promote specific content that doesn't make money.

Although if it works with Amazon SES, I'm fine with that too.

I should mention I'm also looking for recommendations of what you guys use. I'd rather use a plugin that's highly recommended than a shady/risky/unpopular one that might open my site up to exploits.

Well, I'm against that. Collect mail addresses and spam them afterwards,

On my sites I have email diffuser enabled, and many other things to prevent privacy issues. It's simply against the law in most counties.
is used a lot for spamming persons. People get a free AWS account, and start using Amazon SES.

You're probably looking at something different than what I'm aiming to do.

I want my visitors to subscribe to the key content of our website, so when content is published, we can alert them of it instead of having them forget the site's name or constantly load up our page to see if it's anything new.

Unlike forums, apps or social media, we have no way to keep a majority of our traffic informed.

It's not spam or illegal if the person is opting into it and confirming they own the email address. And I'm sure it'll be possible to opt-out. Our privacy policy also states we never sell anyone's email.

@Jon Snow You could try Mailerlite. They offer a free tier, double opt-in, email automation, and a WordPress plugin.

Mailerlite is basically a European version of MailChimp, and they offer a lot of bang for the buck.
