I've been running my medium XF site on ReliableSite.net dedicated server for 2 years now and I realize as hardware is getting cheaper, it makes more sense to get a new server instead of paying the same price every year for depreciating hardware.

My server is around 200K posts. The server specs is below
Quad Core Server - Intel Xeon E3 1230v3
    Memory: 32 GB DDR3 RAM
Primary Hard Drive: 128 GB Primary SSD Drive
Second Hard Drive: 128 GB Second SSD Drive

    I paid around 110 monthly.

What would be a sweet spot for dedicated processors these days?
I just do a price comparison between Digitalocean and reliablesite for same ram, HD and DO seems more expensive. Weird.

Sweet spot for budget conscious would be the Intel Xeon E3-1240v6 Kabylake which is as fast as Xeon E3-1270v5 Skylake :) Where E3-1240v5 Skylake was already slightly faster than E3-1270v3 Haswell

Do love hivelocity. Despite I do host *blushes* with a reseller account at their facility their latency to Latam is great.

@eva2000 whats-s the main benefit from v6? Dont get it.

@OP: there are several providers in Europe which can cut you nice deals in premium datacenters.

You should specify port speed, location and bandwidth :)

    ( no I don't sell servers myself :p )

For me E3 each new generation from v1 to v6 and E5 from v1 to v4 are improved encryption abilities meaning handling encryption/decryption and cryptography for HTTPS/SSL so better HTTPS site performance. That and newer gens support max 64GB of memory instead of 32GB as well amore memory bandwidth due to faster supported DDR4 memory i.e. E3 v6 supports DDR4-2400 and DDR4-1866

example for openssl performance Xeon E3-1245v2 vs Core i7 4790k vs Xeon E3-1240v5 (@Ahmad posted results) https://community.centminmod.com/th...0gb-samsung-pm863-ssd-review.9611/#post-40772
You can also check out https://community.centminmod.com/threads/intel-xeon-e3-1200-v6-kaby-lake-released.10969/ for more info i.e. E3 v6 has Intel Optane 3D Xpoint support too.

OpenSSL performance of E3-1240v6 surpasses the older E3-1275v5 way ahead of E3-1281v3

Though Skylake and Kabylake have a microcode bug which may need bios updates for https://community.centminmod.com/threads/intel-skylake-kaby-lake-nasty-microcode-bug.12079/. I asked Hivelocity as one of my clients are with them on a E3-1230v6 about needing bios update and they said there's don't need to and so far client's server is fine.

Apparently fixed bios started going out in April 2017, so could be by now already fixed http://wccftech.com/intel-hyperthre...sors-was-addressed-by-bios-fix-in-april-2017/

    @eva2000
Just looked at my invoice and see that i've been with the same host for several years using Quad Core Server - Intel Xeon E3 1230v3, 32GB ram and 2x256GB SSD raid 1 software.
Paying around 100/month after various discounts.

I feel like for the same price, I can get a newer, better dedicated server with new CPU even with the same host.

What's your latest experience with the CPU? Your last comment on it was in Sept last year.

if it's around same price for same ram/disk/bandwidth but newer cpu, then yeah worth the move

I tried to price the same specs on various cloud providers (vultr, DO, etc) and they will cost hundreds more each month. I wonder why a dedicated server is cheaper? Do I pay more for cloud servers for the ability to scale up and down at moment notice?

What do you think is the best bang here in the list they offer?

What are you spec'ing for specifically ? Yes you're paying more as the web host you have dedicated server is cheaper than the regular dedicated especially if you want newer v6 CPUS.

Best bang is up to your usage requirements so best figure that out. Normally, I reserve my informed opinion for my paying clients who hire me for server optimisation consults which include web host and server hardware recommendations based on monitored and measured usage stats of the clients' servers over several days :) Just throwing out recommendations without knowing clients real usage and future growth requirements isn't ideal :D

That said, bang for buck in terms of performance to price is same as previously mentioned in this thread = E3-1240v6

With issues with Intel CPU architecture recently discovered, is it wise to move to AMD instead?
