    I have multiple websites running on the same server, and one of them (the forum) went down several hours ago with a "Bad gateway Error code 502".

    Chatgpt got me this info:

    Code:
    [20:23][root@hostname.domain.info ~]# systemctl status php-fpm --no-pager
    ● php-fpm.service - PHP FastCGI Process Manager
         Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/php-fpm.service; enabled; preset: disabled)

        Process: 12123 ExecStart=/usr/local/sbin/php-fpm --daemonize --fpm-config /usr/local/etc/php-fpm.conf --pid /run/php-fpm/php-fpm.pid (code=exited, status=127)
            CPU: 14ms

    Code:
    journalctl -u php-fpm --since "30 minutes ago" --no-pager

    It is failing to start because a required shared library is missing:

    error while loading shared libraries: libavif.so.15: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

    let's determine why libavif.so.15 is missing and what package/version your server expects.

    Please run:

    ldconfig -p | grep -i avif

    libavif.so.16 (libc6,x86-64) => /lib64/libavif.so.16 libavif.so (libc6,x86-64) => /lib64/libavif.so

    That confirms the problem: the system has libavif.so.16, but PHP-FPM is looking specifically for libavif.so.15.

    Let's do just one diagnostic step next. Please run:

    ls -l /lib64/libavif.so*

    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root     13 Sep 18 13:42 /lib64/libavif.so -> libavif.so.16
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root     17 Sep 18 13:42 /lib64/libavif.so.16 -> libavif.so.16.1.1
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 190040 Sep 18 13:42 /lib64/libavif.so.16.1.1

    Good. That confirms there is no libavif.so.15 on the system—only version 16.
    Then it seemed to fail due to the uniqueness of centminmod perhaps.

    I ran the Centmin Mod menu #5 php rebuild, and that fixed the issue. But I didn't do anything that should have caused this.

    After the rebuild I get:
    Code:
    php -v
    PHP 8.2.34 (cli) (built: Sep 30 2026 21:50:41) PGO (NTS)

    Thanks for bug report, checking this out now

    can you post output for this command
    Code (Text):
    yum -q history list libavif

    then take the ID number and post output for this command where XX is ID
    Code (Text):
    yum -q history info XX

    and
    Code (Text):
    yum -q list libavif

    Seems EPEL 9's newer libavif 1.1.1-3 ships .so.16, so a routine dnf update breaks the link since the old file gets removed

    The Centmin Mod fix (all three branches)

    Just pushed to 132.00stable, 140.00beta01 and 141.00beta01:
    • Version locks for PHP's libraries. After a successful PHP build, Centmin Mod versionlocks the EPEL/Remi packages that PHP and its extensions link against (libavif and its AV1 codec libraries, libtidy, libc-client, oniguruma, libzip, ICU and so on). A plain dnf update or yum update then holds them back instead of removing a library out from under PHP. Base OS packages aren't locked.
    • Menu option 5 applies the held updates. Each PHP rebuild first updates those locked packages, rebuilds PHP against them, then locks them again.
    • SSH login warning. If a PHP library ever goes missing anyway, the login message now warns you to run menu option 5 before restarting php-fpm.
    Existing servers get their locks after the first menu option 5 run following
    Code (Text):
    cmupdate

    New installs are locked at the end of installation.

    To see which packages are locked and whether any held update would change a library name:
    Code (Text):
    /usr/local/src/centminmod/tools/php-libs-versionlock.sh status

    To turn the locks off, set
    Code (Text):
    PHP_LIBS_VERSIONLOCK='n'

    in /etc/centminmod/custom_config.inc, then run:
    Code (Text):
    /usr/local/src/centminmod/tools/php-libs-versionlock.sh unlock

    Security updates for the locked libraries are applied at your next menu option 5 run, so keep running menu option 5 for PHP updates as usual.

    I had the same problem on multiple CMM installs. I just recompiled PHP and that did the trick.
