It's simply perfect, saved my a:muted:s several times with new clients that enter in my site. You can follow live every move they make. Page reloads, when they return. With this, Google analytis is in its child shoes.

Yeah it has alot of useful features that Google Analytics lacks when I used it but it did slow my page load speeds down. So eventually decided to remove it - being a page speed addict is hard :D

You can reinstall it. Matomo loads via it's Tag Manager asynchronously nowadays... ;-)

I am mostly interested in the following two parameters:

    - Page load speed. In my webpage tests I often see that google analytics is slowing my website down, how is Matomo in comparison nowadays?
    - How about hardware resources required for smooth running. They are very vague on their website and my rough estimation did not looked good for website with 300 online at peak times. It seemed like I need additional vps just for that.

Would be glad if you can share your experience.

@jair I use it on may, but really many sites and run these from the same server. I installed it on a subdomain and it is fast. Some users even install it on shared hosting environments.
Depending on your requirements, you have to make some adjustments to your SQL and a cron. But additional vps, guess not.

It only makes 2 requests. FYI placed an image of one of them for you.

Since several years we have a 4GB VPS for Matomo (on CMM) only and run all our sites (some of them very large) with it.

You should not use the matomo.js integration any more, use the included Tag Manager it is much more convenient and flexible. And it runs asynchronously which adds nothing to the load speed of your site.

You can even easily optimise the speed of Matomo (and have several 1000 online users handled without problems at even small VPSs) if you use Redis and the QueuedTracking plugin (included with Matomo). It queues up all tracking requests in Redis until the server has resources to process them in Matomo.

Thanks! I might play with it. Kinda used to Google Analytics, but their data mining is starting to make me uneasy. My members will also appreciate it.

One last question, have you noticed some differences in stats between GA and Matomo? Are there large deviations, which might put the reliability of either one in question?

In any case I will let you know about my progress if I decide to go with it.

@jair get some free domains at dot.tk or create some subdomains and test it. That's the best way to take your doubts away.

No. Both report the same numbers, if configured equally.

Didn't know about the Tag manager ! So will retest.

But are you guys running Matomo on same server that the sites the tracking code is being used on ? Or remote ? I use redis and queued tracking too but it was fine in terms of page speed for sites on same server as Matomo install. The problem of pagespeed is when using Matomo tracking code on remote sites which are not on same server as Matomo install i.e. other location on opposite side of the world as Matomo installation. That added an extra 0.5-1 second to page load times there for web sites using Matomo tracking code remotely and not on same server as Matomo

We have one server dedicated to Matomo serving all our sites. So remote. Reason is that we have several sites and wanted to install Matomo only once. Also some of our sites use several servers just for one site.

But for small sites, there should be no problem to install Matomo at the same server,
