    Good news for folks wanting to test out Vultr.com new Intel Xeon E3-1270v6 Bare Metal Instances. They are offering 60% discount and $100 free credit to both new and existing customers Vultr on Twitter. Existing users would need to contact support to request it apparently.


    The $100 credit at $0.179/hr works out to be around 558 hrs of free usage !

    $120/month IIRC is normal non-promo pricing so yes for life or as long as you keep it online or even if you destroy and spin up new one = $120/month

    The promo is for 60% off + $100 credit for new accounts up to 30 days from account sign up. Not sure for existing users but maybe 30 days too. So for 30 days you pay $48 after 60% discount but it's free as you have $100 credit. So you could technically spin up 2x bare metal within 30 days at 2x48 = $96 used up from $100 credit.

    Ah my mistake it's actually $300/m was normal price and $120/m is discounted ! I thought $120/m was normal LOL

    So $300 minus 60% = $120/m for promo period

    So updated Centmin Mod 123.09beta01 code to only trigger the workaround fix for OVH detected servers.

    2nd install run on fresh reloaded CentOS 7.4 64bit OS slightly faster but seems compared to @RoldanLT's Vultr Bare Metal Singapore run Install - Post your Centmin Mod 123.09beta01 install time stats, the slowness is from differences in curl install YUM time at 255s vs 104s. Due to IP geolocation reporting server as being in Canada so YUM mirrorlist was pulling from Canadian YUM locations instead of New York.

    All new VPS/Dedicated servers I get, I will run my centminmodbench.sh benchmark script at bench.centminmod.com to fully evaluate the performance of the server. The results are below.

    • First of the 10Gbps network connectivity is truly amazing up to 329MB/s to 550MB/s bandwidth transfer speeds for wget and axel download benchmarks !. If you require fast network connectivity, then Vultr Bare Metal instances with 10Gbps network is the way to go. Though 5TB bandwidth quota is definitely on the low side to be useful for folks who would really utilise 10Gbps network connectivity.

    GCC 8 Compilation Tests



    Right now I am doing GCC 8 compiler tests (links below) and this Vultr Bare Metal E3-1270v6 Kabylake processor seems like the ideal candidate for some compiler testing :)
    Below is initial first compilation of GCC compiler with 8 January 14, 2018 snapshot.
    • The times include time to compile Binutils 2.29.1 including the Gold linker as well as time to build the custom GCC 8 & Binutils RPMs for 64bit systems.
    • The below compilation of GCC 8 is without Gold linker and without LTO as my script only enables those options wifh GCC 7.2.1 is detected but initial Centmin Mod installs don't install GCC 7.2.1 unless you enable persistent config variables DEVTOOLSETSEVEN='y', CLANG='n' and NGINX_DEVTOOLSETGCC='y' and recompile via centmin.sh menu option 4 first.
    • Centmin Mod LEMP stack also uses compiler caching via ccache. This first run wouldn't have any benefits for ccache. So will do a 2nd run to show how much the speed up is when ccache compiler caching takes effect :)
    1st run without ccache compiler caching took around 1841.25 seconds (30.69 minutes) to compile GCC 8 + Binutils 2.29.1 + build custom GCC 8 RPM + Binutils 2.2.19.1 RPM package.

    2nd run with ccache compiler caching took around 1743.83 seconds (29.06 minutes) to compile GCC 8 + Binutils 2.29.1 + build custom GCC 8 RPM + Binutils 2.2.19.1 RPM package. I think the times were around the same due to time to build the custom RPM stage.

    So what's the general consensus on Vultr bare-metal?
    Is $120/month a good price for these specs? What about the original $300?
    Are there any better/cheaper/more powerful options out there than this?

    original $300/month price isn't worth it. Even temp discounted $120/m is only worth it if you want 10Gbps network connectivity but 5TB quota limits it's usefulness unless you use <5TB per month. But good for hourly billed quick usage ie. need a few hours or days usage etc. But not for 24x7, 30 days a month usage.

    Is that so? I was under the impression it was a great deal since another leading web host has baremetal with processors that are far older than 1270v6: Dedicated Servers | Managed Dedicated Servers

    Also, don't Vultr's cloud VPSes have 10Gbps as well?

    Some providers have 10Gbps but there are very few that offer it on the cheap. Vultr has 10Gbps network yes. Linode has 40Gbps in and 1-10Gbps out depending on plan
