    Hi,

I would like to get your opinion to choose a VPS. I always have used Vultr and Linode however, only small servers no more than 1 vCPU and 2GB Ram.

I have a project and the max budget is $20 and the following providers offers the same thing for $20

    Upcloud - 2 vCPUs / 80 GB SSD Storage / 4 TB Transfer / 4 GB RAM
    Linode - 2 vCPUs / 80 GB SSD Storage / 4 TB Transfer / 4 GB RAM
    Digital Ocean - 2 vCPUs / 80 GB SSD Storage / 4 TB Transfer / 4 GB RAM
    Vultr (1 TB less in Transfer) - 2 vCPUs / 80 GB SSD Storage / 3 TB Transfer / 4 GB RAM
    Ramnode - 2 vCPUs / 80 GB SSD Storage / 4 TB Transfer / 4 GB RAM

    Which one would you recommend?

Also, I'm not sure if SSDNodes is a good choice too?

From SSDNodes paying $13.99 per month (Yearly plan) I can get:
    4 vCPUs / 80 GB NVMe / 8 TB Transfer / 16GB RAM

I'm not sure which one to choose since all of them are the same except SSDNodes.

This will be for an ecommerce site using WordPress and Woocommerce.

I would like to get your recommendations / suggestions.

    Thank you,
    Best Regards

Right now my go to for performance above all is for testing Centmin Mod is Upcloud and if you haven't signed up yet via my referral link (;)), then you also get US$25 credits to use as well while after your first payment, I also get US$50 referral credit :)

Only downside with Upcloud is you can't reinstall OS, you can only delete a VPS and recreate it on a different IP and storage layer isn't as flexible as Linode where you can more easily migrate datacenters. Linode also has a solid backup system where you can restore backups to new Linodes and make staging copies of your VPS more easily.

My important sites are on Linode.com right now but you have a mix of cpu models that you can get so it isn't as certain like Upcloud or Vultr.com which has higher plans guaranteed for Skylake cpus but their disk I/O is always the slowest compared to Upcloud and Linode.

DigitalOcean like Linode have a mix of cpu models you can get with varying performance i.e. DigitalOcean - Benchmarks - DigitalOcean US$15/month droplet benchmarks - Intel Xeon E5-2630Lv2 vs Intel Xeon Gold 6140. So check what you get when you spin up a DigitalOcean droplet VPS. Though if you choose the newer datacenters i.e. NYC3 vs NYC1, you're more likely to get newer cpu models.

Centmin Mod official install page lists all web host providers known to work well with Centmin Mod at Centmin Mod LEMP Stack Install Nginx on CentOS. So my advice is test the hourly billed providers for a few days each and see which is best for your needs ;)

    Hi Eva,

Thank you for your time looking at the list and recommendations :)

I believe I can test as you said the only one that I can't test is SSDNodes I would have to pay the entire month and I'm not sure if it's a good choice or not, would you discard SSDNodes from the list above and choose any of the other providers even though SSDNodes provide more resources apparentely?

    Thank you once again.
    Best Regards

SSDnode while great uses Virtuozzo7/OpenVZ7 so comes with same limitations outlined in Official install page when it comes to OpenVZ at Centmin Mod LEMP Stack Install Nginx on CentOS. VPS wise, you'll get best optimal performance with KVM VPS provider like Upcloud, Linode, and DigitalOcean etc and they have no backup/snapshot support and no redundant disk layer.

Though if you have you own 3rd party remote backups, then SSDnode is okay see Benchmarks - SSDNodes - ssdnodes.com upto 91% discount on KVM VPS until May 31, 2018

    Hi Eva,

Thank you :) I looked at the Datacenter locations and just deployed some VPS in Linode / Vultr since their Datacenters are closer to my country (Costa Rica)

    1 - Vultr Miami
    2 - Linode Atlanta
    2 - Linode Dallas
    3 - Vultr Dallas
    4 - Vultr Los Angeles
    5 - Vultr Silicon Valley

Based on what you told me disk I/O in Vultr I believe I will choose Linode :)

Thank you for your suggestions and help!
    Best Regards

The list above is the order of less latency from my country :)

Try OVH, only $3.5/mo for 2GB Ram

    Which country are you from?
    Brazil?
I am and for me the Miami vultr was the one that had a lower latency as well. Although I'm upcloud now (because of the balance I already have there) I plan to someday migrate to the vultr ...

    Hi @fabianski

I'm in Costa Rica so the best in terms of latency are:
    1 - Vultr Miami
    2 - Linode Atlanta

Unfortunately, there are no good VPS providers closer so those are my only options for now.
I decided to use Linode because of the scalable block storage even though, Vultr has it. However, it's only available in New Jersey :( and the latency is not good from Costa Rica.

It's the same for CDN's I don't see any benefit in terms of speed, actually it slows down my websites because there are no close PoP around CR.

I believe the only one is CloudFlare however, it always add at least 200-300ms more to each website to load. I can't use their cache everything policy because all my sites are membership sites.

    Best Regards

That's odd considering that they claim to offer KVM and not OpenVZ. (See About our KVM platform on Get fast SSD cloud servers and save $100s | Pricing @ SSD Nodes)

Anyway, I was going to give it a try, but read a lot of negative reviews, all post Oct-2018. So, they appeared to have gone bad, specially going bad after 14-days refund period is over. Let's look for another cheap VPS.

You should choose Linode or Ramnode. I don't know if Linode has a free $ 20 credit program anymore, I see a few coupons for linode here, you can try some linode coupon here : https://tophostcoupon.com/linode-coupon-codes/

    Hello,
I am a Web application developer and I've been using Ramnode for over 2 years and it's great for Ecommerce Sites I suggest you choose Ramnode and you can avail 40% extra using Halloween Coupons

I am a bit late to the game.
I have SSDNODES for over 2 years now, in the beginning the performance is ok for the price point. but lately it is very slow. Recently I got a lot of promotional emails from them trying to sell more VPS, and I believe the poor performance is due to them overselling.

I am looking to switch to a different host, your experience may differ.

Other folks I know also having same complaints with ssdnodes, slowness and even some have been contacted by ssdnodes to move VPS nodes and they seem to be moved to slower and older Xeon E5-26xx v3 cpus instead of their advertised faster modern Intel Xeon Scalable Gold/Silver cpus. So be aware, what VPS you initially sign up for over time might not be the VPS specs/hardware you end up with over time too.

I have faced it first hand today. Provisioned a new server with them, simply because they are offering 48GB RAM and 12 vCPU for lower price than what others are charging for 1/6th the resources. However, instead of getting Silver CPU, they gave me E5-2650 v4.

I raised a ticket, and they moved me to an Intel Gold CPU. However, now I've to reinstall everything afresh.

Sounds like they're just banking on regular uneducated folks sticking to older cpus and not knowing the difference and only move folks who do.
