looks like you got 4 cpu London one so same cpu as @Colin Intel Xeon E5-2680Wv3 so speed is very much the same with slightly higher disk IO

Resized back to a 1Gb instance and back on the 2680... not scientific enough to be a pattern, but it's quick to do so.

The resize, migration is apart from a reboot seamless. In a LB environment that could be quite handy on maintenance days. Not dug into the API, that way be dragons imho.

Backup snapshotting is at the moment quick! <30 secs to snap the pretty bare bones instance. <2 mins to shutdown, restore drive & boot, again a minimal bare bones instance.

Brew time then it's networking time.

Can someone who is client of Linode and Upcloud compare both services?

    My preference of Linode: 2 GB Memory for 10 $ and 1 $ per 1 ipv4.
    Upcloud: 1 GB Memory for 10 $ and 2 $ per 1 ipv4 without VAT.

    Thanks,

P.s. I am not a customer of Upcloud.

Hope that my hearth is made right decision

After migrate to UpCloud, I have to say that I love Finland more and more (y)

    Some incredible results:
    • recompilation of nginx - 1,5 minutes (before on DO about 20 minutes)
    • recompilation of php (with phpPGO) - 9 minutes (before on DO about 45 minutes)
    • taking backup (100GB) - 3 seconds (before on DO about 57 minutes)
    Amazing!

Preconfigured servers are in middle (Linode & Digital Ocean) for how much ram and cpu you get.
For 40 dollars you get :
UpCloud - 4GB ram and 4 CPU cores, 100GB MaxIOPS (incredible fast!), IPv6 address free of charge, Intel E5-2687W v3 processors performing at 3.10GHz
Linode - 8GB ram and 4 CPU cores, 96GB SSD
Digital Ocean - 4GB ram and 2 CPU cores, 60 GB SSD

Data centers are: Helsinki, Frankfurt, Chicago and London. prices are same for all except Helsinki (50% higher price).
You can raise cpu, ram, add more disks even to your preconfigured servers, and back to default without problem.

Server is created in 1 minute and you can install your custom preconfigured Centos, or what ever Linux distribution you like. You can import your VMware image if you like.
Also, you can setup script what will be executed after server is installed.
How much they care for their servers:
Cloud servers are connected with a 500 Mbps network connection, which can be further upgraded to 1 Gbps.
You can pay only with credit card or through bank if you have bank account in Finland.
You can connect with VNC console or with htlm5 console on your dashboard.
Private networking - all servers inside the same user account form a private network amongst themselves and thus can be connected with a private network address as well.

You can edit reverse dns name for your ips.
Interesting thing is you can manage your dashboard with widgets.

    dash.png

    Pros:
    • Speed of disks
    • Speed of everything :)
    • Very friendly company
    • Reasonable price for quality
    • Finland :)

    Cons:
    • You can not set custom kernel.
    • You can not give custom name for snapshots
    • Ticket system (support) is not implemented (you have to do all through email/phone)
    • You can not pay with PayPal

    Conclusion
All I can say that I think that I discover diamond in cloud server.
I am not regretful for my leaving from Digital Ocean. I have to say that they gave me refund after I destroy droplet and all snapshots (y)
I recommand UpCloud to all, and you can start free trial and 30 days money back guarantee (30-day refund from your first deposit for all unused credits in your account).

ah extra $40/month for 1Gbps network connectivity !
nice to know and definitely useful for creating a geo located server cluster setup :)

quite expensive expansions c.q. addons at Upcloud. For example 1 GB additional memory is almost just as expensive as a whole fresh 1GB VPS server with 1 ipv4, MAX SSD storage , CPU etc. 9.79 vs 10

Interesting 8GB VPS would be quite expensive indeed

For me personal, nothing can beat Linode. I have tried all significant competitors. In terms of costs and benefits, data-center and yes even uptime. :)

indeed true which is why my forum is still hosted on Linode, though UpCloud is coming close with complimentary geographic locations too. Just Linode and UpCloud lack native anti-DDOS features - but seems Linode is building up their network connectivity for it which i hope trickles down to end user Linode VPSes.

The next 12-24 months will be interesting to use how web hosts evolve in the web hosting area with the threat of DDOS attacks on the rise :)

    True.

However a Dddos solution is not everything, not the golden egg, if it is too much a burden for the network,
they throw you out temporarily, just like the non DDos solution approach.

Only the big players, the Coca Cola's, the president site etc. will not be thrown out but who pay big also determined.
For a small business you could better rent a few VPS servers at different company's, different locations. With health checks and access monitoring on website requests.

Then the overrated, overpriced DDos solutions for small servers.

that's what i do for centminmod.com geodns cluster of servers - one location gets attacked just auto fallback to another regions sever within the cluster :)

When I go from VPS to Cloud, after researching internet, choice was among Linode and Digital Ocean.
I choose DO because in that time Linode do not offer PayPal.
Ram and CPU was same on both for same price.

Than Linode was attacked by DDOS, and that is last for long, still they get DDosed in wawes. They need too stop people going to another clouds, so they doubled ram for same price.

I was a customer of Digital Ocean, but there I feel like one little fish in big ocean. "Personal touch" is never existed.
One problem that they can not solved was that snapshot is being charged per Gb, and their volume snapshot are calculated wrong (snapshot was 80Gb but my volume has only 40GB).

I was looking for alternative. Thinking about Linode, but still they are DDosed and they are big company, same as Do, so it would be same.
Because of this thread, I heard about UpCloud, and decide to go with them. Prices are fair for preconfigured servers, and their speed is very, very good. And I am feel like I am part of family, not just another fish in sea.
