I've not used any other comparable services, but very happy so far with my upcloud server.

My only concern so far is backup. Upcloud has good facilities to backup and restore at upcloud, but I'd be more comfortable if I also had a backup somewhere else.

I'm very new to all this so possibly I am misunderstanding what I think I need?

If I have were to have an offsite copy of my upcloud disk should it be a straightforward matter to restore it elsewhere? Or is it only every useful at upcloud? ie are offsite backups of a server useful? or not?

Useful, but only on that server, generally speaking.

always useful to have especially if you transfer offsite to say Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage like places which have high availability/uptime

Not being dependent on the VPS provider.
