I wish to downgrade the client for it connecting to a 10.1 server and this server has a lot on it and redoing the entire thing might take days and also have bugs. Easiest would just be to install the right client version for mariadb. Thanks.

Not needed MariaDB 10.3 client can connect to MariaDB 10.1 server fine. Vice versa may be problematic though for MariaDB 10.1 client to connect to MariaDB 10.3 server.

If it's remote connection, you can also do it via ssh remote connection so it's always using remote MariaDB client/server.
