Well I have a couple of Vultr VPS's and was trying the Digital Ocean Offering, everything about it seems slow compared to the Vultr one and im closer to the DO one (London) as the Vultr one is Amsterdam.....

What do you think of Linode ?

Yeah DigitalOcean definitely is slower than Vultr. Linode for CPU performance can vary greatly due to several generations of cpus on Intel and AMD side in the mix, so you don't know which you'd land on. So worth spinning up a few Linodes until you find a nice fast CPU :) Hence, I always benchmark and test a new server before deciding if it's a keeper :D

But Linode's strength is everything else, disk resilience and storage layer and ability to clone/migrate VPS servers between datacenters and their transfer speeds are much faster with outbound network speeds >1Gbps up to 12Gbps https://www.linode.com/pricing/ while other VPS provides are around 1Gbps. Vultr does have fast network connectivity outbound too but nothing published as guaranteed like Linode. And certainly not 40Gbps network transfer speeds inbound side.

This forum uses Linode for past 8yrs now :) Affiliate link https://centminmod.com/linode/ ;)

Linode and Vultr does have London as option as well.
Are you closer to London or your visitors?
Should it be about your visitors, a transfer is always a good option.

In addition, what do you mean by slower?
On a sharded platform you always depend on (busy) neighbors, possibly outdated host servers, overselling etc. So you can also encounter these slower host servers at Linode and Vultr.

Apart from that, I think price/quality: Linode is very good.
Of course, we'll have to wait and see how this goes in the future.
As Linode was taken over by Akamai a few days ago.

I cannot recommend spinning to a suitable CPU. Nowadays, large VPS providere perform regular maintenance. And as part of that, you may still be put on a different host server,as part of the maintenance. With some bad luck your VPS is places on an older host server with older CPU. Wasted time if you ask me. When performance is important, take a higher model.

Yes I realise its about my visitors, Im closer to London as in the UK, however I have a Vultr VPS in Amsterdam and Just spun up a DO one in London, both pretty similar specs.....

    The Vultr one is.....

    Quicker to reboot
    Quicker to connect to
Quicker to install or upgrade Nginx or PHP
Two SSH windows open, I can do 2 or 3 things on the Vultr VPS whilst the DO one is still on number 1

Hence everything I have done on the DO VPS just Seems Slower.......

Yes that is an issue with Linode and any VPS provider that mixes cpus. Upcloud being a new VPS provider has managed to keep the issue limited as most of the new VPS host nodes are AMD EPYC based now some regions are guaranteed i.e. NYC.

Vultr also provides some kind of guarantee of newer processors.

I'd like for Linode to offer dedicated VPS plans for specific CPU families i.e. Intel and AMD line similar to what Hetzner are doing on their Cloud VPS lines.

Source compiled Nginx/PHP is highly dependent on CPU clock speed and number of CPU thread/cores. Higher clock speed + more CPU core/threads = faster.
