    Dedicated thread to my first time adventures using SoYouStart E3-SSD-3 server in their BHS, Canada datacenter :)

    ID validation & Order Process



    It took ~15hrs for ID validation to process my submitted IDs and then took ~4hrs for them to setup the server for me. So all up ~19hrs from time of order to getting the email that my E3-SSD-3 server was ready. No horror stories of extended delays ! :D

    SoYouStart E3-SSD-3 plan consists of:
    • Intel Xeon E3-1245v2 Ivy Bridge based processor quad core + hyperthreading = 8 cpu threads total
    • 32GB memory
    • 3x 120GB Intel 320 SSD series in raid 1

    Selecting linux distribution via SoYouStart manager, chose CentOS 6.5 64bit

    Proceed with CentOS 6.5 disk setup for SoYouStart server. I discarded their default partitioning for my own with EXT4 partitions :)

With raid 1 random reads at 392.5MB/s and random writes at 60.8MB/s versus raid 0 random reads at 424.5MB/s and random writes at 3x times faster with 181.3MB/s due to raid 0 with 3x 120GB Intel 320 SSD. Disk random write IOPs was improved too with raid 0 at 46,408 IOPs vs raid 1 at 15,576 IOPs.

    Will re-run centminmodbench.sh with Centmin Mod .08 beta01 LEMP web stack installed to compare with virgin setup.

    Looks like I need to work on tuning Centmin Mod's tweaked TCP settings in /etc/sysctl.conf as they lowered local or closer geographical region bandwidth speed for single threaded wget but improved bandwidth speed for locations on the other side of the world. The gains for other side of the world percentage wise are much higher than percentage lost on same local region bandwidth speed though for some cities. Either way I need to tune and test more :)

    Note the cachefly results, according to mtr tests, trace route took a different route compared to the default TCP tests

    Using smartctl command.
    • power on hours = 13,043 - 13,182 that's like 543.5 - 549.25 days or upto 1.5 yrs - so definitely not a new drive heh
    • power cycle count 16 times for sda and sdb but 110 times for sdc
    • Media_Wearout_Indicator looks good if I am reading it right at 100% life still
    • Host Writes between 1.86GB - 2.34GB and Host Reads between 4.94GB - 6.97GB so far lightly used SSDs :D

    But from my location to SYS server which is in Canada.
    I got only got 250ms now
    Very good improvement
    And before I got 17 hops to reach SYS server now only 11 :)
