    It looks like something is utterly mulching the responses that IE/Edge sees, it looks like whatever compression is being used isn't respecting the supported compression types.

    It trashes basically all the non-html content. CSS is also generally fairly damaged and causes all jaavscript to fail, and css layout to fail

    wow ... hmmm definitely will investigate ! Though harder if I can't replicate issue in IE11/Edge on my end :(

    IE accounts for 1.9% of forum visitors, Edge = 1.1% and Safari = 0.55%

    hmm not entirely sure if I pin pointed the problem but it seems ngx_brotli module leaked some brotli content encoding headers for non supported browsers like IE11 and Edge for only some page http requests i.e. fontawesome's min css file. Brotli browser support Can I use... Support tables for HTML5, CSS3, etc

    Posted an issue to ngx_brotli repo at possible leak of br encoding to non supported browsers IE/Edge ? · Issue #42 · google/ngx_brotli · GitHub

    I disabled ngx_brotli compression to test in nginx.conf include file /usr/local/nginx/conf/brotli_inc.conf turned off ngx_brotli compression
    Code (Text):
    brotli off;
    brotli_static off;
    brotli_min_length 1000;
    brotli_buffers 32 8k;
    brotli_comp_level 5;
    brotli_types text/plain text/css text/xml application/javascript application/x-javascript application/xml application/xml+rss application/ecmascript application/json image/svg+xml;

    and cleared all the caches.

    It could also be because of Sucuri cloudproxy in front of the forums caching and serving the brotli content encoding = br incorrectly ?

    Now in Safari it's a little better.

    2 minutes later:
    Ok now I cleared Safari's cache and the problem is solved for me.

    how does it look ? specific pages of forums or all forum pages ? does it happen logged into forums as well as logged out of forums ?

    edit: ah updating to nginx 1.11.7 re-enabled brotli compression in /usr/local/nginx/conf/brotli_inc.conf so disabled it again now

    hmm i think i might have figured it out, i had sucuri end compression enabled (gzip), that might have double compressed some static files as well as mess with brotli compressed assets that would be served from cache ??? will later re-try brotli compression but with sucuri end compression disabled

    re-enabled ngx_brotli on the forums here for some static assets seems webpagetest.org reports same issues on IE11 and MS Edge browsers, but my local browsers for these versions not showing error yet.
