Hardware Intel Broadwell Xeon Processor Shortage !

    Looks like there is a supply shortage for Intel Xeon Broadwell based cpus (E5-16xx v4 and E5-26xx v4) until around April 2018 as Intel didn't anticipate demand to be as high as it for older Xeon Broadwell cpus and thought everyone would upgrade and move to new Intel Xeon Scalable Skylake series Intel Partners Face Shortage Of Broadwell Xeon Processors

    Aren't new Skylake processors are supposed to be better than previous generation . Are new processor costly as compared to earlier one in terms of price : performance ratio ?

    Newer Xeon Scale is a complete new platform so new cpu and motherboard needed as opposed to older Xeon E5 Broadwell, folks only need to buy/upgrade cpu and keep their existing motherboard and hardware so less costly overall. Most data centers would have bought in bulk for spare part hardware for ram, motherboards and cpu so moving to a completely new platform is costly as they'd have to invest in a new bulk buy of spare parts too.

    Also depending on work loads have to be careful of Xeon Scale's dynamic frequency scaling/turbo boost for base clocks, turbo and AVX-512 work load turbo as outlined at On the dangers of Intel's frequency scaling. Though issue Cloudflare outlined regarding OpenSSL 1.1 usage of AVX-512 was fixed at crypto/x86_64cpuid.pl: suppress AVX512F flag on Skylake-X. · openssl/openssl@7933762 · GitHub
    But other software that use AVX-512 could have same performance impact i.e. nginx
