I am currently on a 1gb Linode plan and besides the huge DDOS and other shenanigans recently at Linode my experience has been good. The recent happenings though leaves a little bit of a sour taste in my mouth though. Linode seems to be hit by DDOS's quite often, by my records at least once a month for the server that I am on.

I have a production Xenforo forum currently running good on Linode. This setup, which happened only a few months ago, was my first VPS and venture into using Centminmod. I have to say it's been great and running solid!!

I was curious who here runs their production sites, especially forums, on RamNode? How has your experience been thus far? Have you also used Linode and if so how do the two compare?

I had ramnode awhile ago. I ended up leaving them because my site was getting DDoSed a lot and their protected IP that I got didn't seem to do too much in stopping the attacks from getting through. Overall they have a quality operation - I experienced very little downtime and they always responded to support tickets right away. FYI - check out webhostingtalk.com offers section, they usually post a "deal" where you can get a nice discount.

One day I realized that I could get a whole server for a little more than what a VPS was costing me. So, I decided to move away from VPSs and to dedicated.

Right now I host my site at OVH. I'm very happy with the service and everything that is included. Their prices are excellent. The have nice price points for just about everyone. Besides getting the features of a server (shared nothing) they have Anti-DDoS for free and allow you to add as many dedicated ips as you're going to need for $3 an IP (on-time non-recurring) which is nice if you plan on having a bunch of sites with dedicated IPs. They also have unlimited bandwidth.

Their SLA is awesome too. Their network went down for 4 hours once and I ended up getting a free week of hosting as a result. Every other hosting provider I've ever dealt with, when I experienced downtime, had an excuse for why they were down. I never got a refund from anyone except OVH... I've been on hosts for 10+ years. OVH gave me a credit without me even having to do anything, I credit them highly for that.

Anyway, good luck in finding the right hosting solution!

Actually 3 months ago I moved 2 other of my forums for the first time to 2x RamNode 1GB KVM VPSes Los Angeles location. It's been okay besides 1 VPSes hitting up the ram limits and swapping to disk when I run full forum/site backups as the size and database are 6+ GB in size. So upgrading that VPS to a higher plan. With that said, it's too early for me to say with as much certainty as my confidence in Linode for running a forum. And well I've never experienced a DDOS personally myself besides the Linode outages.

@hungphutho and @RoldanLT had a nice discussion on DDOS protection at VPS DDoS Protected Solutions ? | Centmin Mod Community

Been running on a ramnode (2GB Premium Plan) for a while now. Multiple sites (IPS forum, vBulletin forum and custom coded laravel site).
Never had an issue with them, very happy.
Cannot compare to Linode as I have never used them.

Thank you for the replies everyone.

Is there a reason why I don't really see people using OVH's vps plans here? They have very very good pricing compared to Linode, etc

Maybe because we use OVH dedicated servers instead?? I do - have 2 .. And they are rock solid..

Maybe so. With their dedicated servers being so solid I would assume that their VPS servers are just as good. I wish I could afford and had the need for a dedicated server but my Xenforo forum runs perfectly on the 1gb memory Linode plan.

If I decide to switch from Linode to a Ramnode KVM is there an "easy" way to transfer from vps to vps?

    easy is relative..

Transferring data from one server to another is always the same. To backup data and transfer to new server. You can try some tips I posted and discussion at https://community.centminmod.com/posts/22702/

Probably this is Layer 7 type of attack and Ramnode can't mitigate that.

All positive things I can say about Ramnode KVM Premium Plan:
    • Much faster CPU, SSD, Network compare to Linode 4GB plan and below
    • You have access to 4 CPU cores in all plans and also faster than Linode
    • With cheap DDOS protection, but that will only protect you from Layer 3 and 4 DDOS

Another one is The dedicated server for all your projects - So you Start which has excellent prices but not a lot of SSD dedicated servers. Most of the server look like their old servers they use to offer at the main OVH site. Nevertheless, the prices are excellent if you plan on keeping the server - there is a setup fee which has to be factored which isn't good for someone who wants to get a cheap server for a month.

@RoldanLT I read your thread about Layer 7 and I'm going to be going with sucuri.net in the future. Looks like a really nice service!
