According to w3techs.com web server survey http://w3techs.com/technologies/cross/web_server/ranking, Nginx has replaced Apache in Top 1000 web sites - Nginx 38.8% vs Apache 33.7% :)

Nginx is just a whisker away from also overtaking Apache for Top 10000 sites too at Nginx 39.1% vs Apache 39.2%.

Although still along way for total site usage http://w3techs.com/technologies/overview/web_server/all but it's on the rise according to historical trends http://w3techs.com/technologies/history_overview/web_server

Indeed alot of the times spikes or drops in usage for web servers is determined by the larger web hosts i.e. Godaddy, Microsoft Azure etc
