Nginx Nginx 1.16 & 1.17 Roadmap

Nginx roadmap has been updated for Nginx 1.16 stable and Nginx 1.17 mainline Roadmap – nginx. Centmin Mod will always use Nginx mainline builds so the progression will be from Nginx 1.15.x mainline to Nginx 1.17 mainline.

Mainline has security + all bug fixes, while stable only has some critical and bug fixes but not all over the course of a year. Basically, Nginx 1.16.0 stable is based on snapshot of last Nginx 1.15.x mainline while Nginx 1.17.0 mainline is also based on snapshot of last Nginx 1.15.x mainline. Over time Nginx 1.17.x increments will add new features i.e. QUIC/HTTP3, all bug/security fixes and end up diverging from Nginx 1.16.x stable.

Might have bad news for you folks if Nginx follows past practices they only land and develop whatever is available in OpenSSL and it seems OpenSSL won't support HTTP/3 QUIC until OpenSSL 3.1 in 2021 at least https://community.centminmod.com/threads/http-3-quic-support-not-landing-in-openssl-until-3-1.19132/.
