Is there any rule of thumb with regards to how many instances of WP can be on a VPS?

I need to setup a bunch of WP ecom sites using Woocommerce for a client.

I'm going to be using on of the ssdnodes 16GB VPSs.

If anyone has any suggestions, let me know.

It is really a matter of traffic. I have run close to 10 low traffic sites on a single 2gb VPS with high performance without making a dent. But there are other factors such as version of php, database, caching solutions etc. If you can provide more specifics I can try to hone on in a better answer for you.

Thanks. Since I'm setting everything up from scratch for the client, I don't have existing sites to help determine what's needed. I think he has about 15 ecom sites he wants me to setup.

If you really want to bet cheap about it and I would be you can probably put them all on the same server and then adjust resources as traffic grows.

That's what I'm thinking. I'll move any stores which gain traction to another VPS. It'll be an easy sell to my client if the site has a lot of traffic.

monitoring, measuring and testing only real way. As user concurrent traffic and load is ultimately the deciding factor. There's a difference between 10,000 visitors per day spread evenly over 24hrs versus 5,000 visitors at the same very second and then remaining 5,000 visitors over rest of a 24hr period. The latter pattern of traffic is more intensive.

So you think I can put 16 WP sites on the server?

Remember I have nothing. Client is asking me how many sites. Both my client and myself realize that what ever number is not in concrete. Looking for a ballpark number.

I can't tell you for sure Jimmy but you should definitely try however don't promise the client anything. Without traffic on new sites I'm fairly certain that you can but that's just my intuition from running about 7 sites on a 1 CPU 2GB VPS (UpCloud Chicago) that probably maxed out about 40-50 users each at a time.

I've been running WordPress for 11 years (and Woocommerce for 4 years) and would have zero hesitation at putting 16 sites on a VPS with 16GB of RAM running Centminmod. :)
