    Hi,
i'm looking to jump to the cloud and this stack and don't really know how to get started. My set it is not ideal and a bit of a hack because i'm not a server guy... but it's worked till now. I'm just tired of paying for it and reducing costs is my biggest ramp up for 2016. I actually lost money in 2015 even though i made money and that needs to stop.

First, what do i need? I have an older dedicated box with 12 cores
    Name
    Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5645 @ 2.40GHz
    Speed
    2394.045 MHz
    Cache
    12288 KB

    and 8gb of ram.

These proc's are older, so i'm not sure how that ramps up to compare to today's hardware. i don't think i need all 12 now. My loads rarely break .5

I also have a ton of data. I currently use 275gb of storage on a raided pair of 500gb sa-10k's, so i'm basically screwed out of even the largest packages that only offer 196 gb of space. What are the storage options? I can offload my db somewhere? my gallery? my backups (I keep 3 days locally to save xfer time in cse, but also offload to s3 in case a drive epic failure or other major DR)

I also have 6 smaller sites that run wordpress. should i consider a 2nd instance for these?

Emails- will i have mx? control through my own server or do i need to use google apps/etc?

    dns - i currently self-host. Do i need to go to cloudflare/etc?

welcome @briansol to Centmin Mod Community. For hosting questions, you might want to check out the dedicated or vps hosting sub forums under the category Web hosting & System Administration | Centmin Mod Community

Centmin Mod is provide as is, so short of scripted related bugs or issues, any further optimisation to the web stack components - nginx, php-fpm, mariadb mysql, csf firewall etc or web app specific configurations are left to the Centmin Mod user to deal with. So I do not provide any free support for such. Getting Started Guide linked below is also important resource to bookmark and read ;)

However, Centmin Mod users are free to help each other out and ask questions or give answers on this community forum. My hopes are that this community forum evolves so that more veteran long time Centmin Mod users help new Centmin Mod users out :)

3rd party is only way as Centmin Mod doesn't provide pop/imap email support beyond basic MTA postfix for outgoing server sent emails. 3rd party for less headaches, better reliability, uptime and much more robust anti-spam management see

3rd party dns is recommended too see centminmod.com/nginx_domain_dns_setup.html#dns - some web hosts have the own dns services they can provide to their customers too i.e. DigitalOcean or use Cloudflare in which case also check out Getting Started Guide step 5

I'd say one thing, a 5 generation old Intel Xeon E3-1230v1 with 4 cpu cores + 4 threads = 8 cpu threads is as fast as a dual Intel Xeon E5620 (with 2x 4+4 = 16 cpu threads). Every generation of Intel Xeon E3-1230 and higher since i.e. E3-1230v2, E3-1230v3, E3-1230v5 is latest just released, adds another 10-20% more performance over E3-1230v1 but magnitudes higher hardware assisted encryption/descryption performance with each generation. Xeon E3-12xx v5 is latest Skylake processor in single socket space. Check out http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/xeon-e3-1275-v3-haswell-cpu,3590.html

The equivalent dual cpu socket of Xeon E3-1230v1 Sandybridge is dual Xeon E5-2620v1 and higher models which is the Sandy Bridge-EP models released in 2012 and subsequently had Xeon E5-2600v2 IvyBridge-EP and E5-2600v3 Haswell-EP Dual Intel Xeon E5-2620 (V1, V2 and V3) compared and http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/intel-xeon-e5-2600-v3-haswell-ep,3932.html

    Welcome to the Forum :).
About your needs, I suggest go with decent Dedicated Server not a VPS.
A Dedicated server from OVH/Reliablesite/Versaweb with pure SSD.

Thanks, George. Understood about the support levels. Looks you answered most of my questions about the topics.

Regarding the vps vs dedicated, I am in this for the sole purpose of cutting costs. My dedicated machine is too pricey. I can't seem to find something as powerful for any significant price difference (enough to warrant the site move labor). ssd options add significant costs.
