    Nginx 1.17.X
    MariaDB 10.3.X
    With all the different branches of MariaDB. Which branch do you want to use and why?

    Thanks,

    Nginx 1.17.x
    MariaDB 5.5/10.x
    Generally newer performs better for some situations/work loads or has more enhanced features. But newer branches of MySQL, Percona or MariaDB generally focus on multi-threaded performance at expense of single threaded performance. So single threaded performance MariaDB 5.5 is faster than 10.x while 10.x faster for multi-threaded performance. More cpu thread/cores you have the better you're equipped to handle faster MariaDB 10.x branches multi-threaded workloads. MariaDB increment 10.0, 10.1, 10.2, 10.3 all focus on subsequently improving that multi-threaded performance to work better with high cpu core/thread count cpus. There is of course other new or enhanced features with newer branches alot centered around MySQL replication and InnoDB performance and scalability.

    Centmin Mod 123.09beta01 defaults to MariaDB 10.1 branch as it's what I tested the most my automatic MySQL optimisations based on server environment detection.

    If you have a spare test VPS/server, you can manually enable the 10.1 to 10.2 upgrade routine in 123.09beta01 but any issues short term or long term wise you find would need to be reported to me but only resolution for that test VPS is to reinstall CentOS as I currently wouldn't have enough spare time to look into any issues with upgrade process (same with MariaDB 10.2 to 10.3 routine). So be prepared to backup data files and databases and wipe the server if MariaDB 10.2 test upgrade doesn't work.

    On test VPS, you can enable Centmin Mod 123.09beta01's centmin.sh menu option 11 submenu option 6 to upgrade MariaDB 10.1.x branch to MariaDB 10.2.x branch by first setting in persistent config file at /etc/centminmod/custom_config.inc the variable BEFORE running centmin.sh
    Code (Text):
    ENABLE_MARIADBTENTWOUPGRADE='y'

    There's also a variable ENABLE_MARIADBTENTHREEUPGRADE='y' to enable MariaDB 10.2.x to 10.3.x upgrades which is only supported on CentOS 7.x for now due to reported issues with CentOS 6. Again do on test VPS/server only and not live production server as MariaDB 10.2 to 10.3 has had even less long term testing than MariaDB 10.1 to 10.2 process. If you run into problems, my only solution for you is to setup a new VPS/server and reinstall Centmin Mod and migrate your site data and MySQL data if intact (if not that restore from MySQL backups).

    yum upgrade MariaDB-client MariaDB-common MariaDB-compat MariaDB-devel MariaDB-server MariaDB-shared

    Upgrade MariaDB 10.1 To 10.2 & 10.2 To 10.3 Differences

    MariaDB 10.1 to 10.2 has changes you need to be aware of which may affect your script/mysql using app specifically and Centmin Mod may not have tested for it so read Upgrading from MariaDB 10.1 to MariaDB 10.2 (centmin.sh menu option 11 takes care of step 1 to 8 with exception of step 4, you need to do MySQL backups yourself) and inspect /etc/my.cnf before and after MariaDB 10.2 upgrades. Centmin Mod upgrade routines try to as best adjust /etc/my.cnf for MariaDB 10.2 compatibility with previous MariaDB 10.1 but if your web app/scripts have issues, you'll need to figure those out yourself.

    Same goes for MariaDB 10.2 to 10.3 upgrades Upgrading from MariaDB 10.2 to MariaDB 10.3 (centmin.sh menu option 11 takes care of step 1 to 8 with exception of step 4, you need to do MySQL backups yourself)

    One of the big changes is from MariaDB 10.2.2 and newer, innodb_strict_mode is enabled by default while previously it was disabled by default and default options for sql_mode have changed.

    Install MariaDB 10.3 By Default

    Centmin Mod 123.09beta01 and newer also has experimental and optional choice of installing MariaDB 10.3 as default version. See details at Beta Branch - allow MariaDB 10.3 MySQL to be default optionally. Again test on test VPS/server and not live production site servers.

    Code (Text):

    yum updates will also be used to update mariadb within same major version i.e. 10.1 or 10.2 or 10.3 just not for upgrading major versions

    @eva2000 after running a yum update MariaDB wasn't updated to the newest version (10.1.38) So I tried running yum update again. I get this message:

    Code (Text):
    yum update
    Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, langpacks, priorities, versionlock
    Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile
     * base: ewr.edge.kernel.org
     * epel: mirror.compevo.com
     * extras: mirror.fileplanet.com
     * rpmforge: mirror.teklinks.com
     * updates: mirror.fileplanet.com
    267 packages excluded due to repository priority protections
    Excluding 1 update due to versionlock (use "yum versionlock status" to show it)

    Why are 267 packages being exluded?

    Thanks,

    @eva2000 Another thing I noticed was when I signed onto centmin. Then exit (24) it showed that there were yum updates. I didn't have time to do the updates and choose to do them later. So I signed back onto centmin tonight and then exited (24) to see the yum updates again. But this time it says there are no yum updates. Is this a bug because earlier today there were updates?

    Thanks,
    Itworx4me

    I am still getting this 267 packages being exluded. I am using this code to update:
    Code (Text):
    yum update --disableplugin=priorities --enablerepo=remi

    I have updated /etc/centminmod/custom_config.inc with:
    Code (Text):
    MENUEXIT_ALWAYS_YUMCHECK='y'

    How do I get the 267 packages to update???

    Thanks,
    Itworx4me

    those packages are excluded for a reason they will conflict with what centmin mod uses so you can ignore that

    Thank You @eva2000 but it still doesn't solve my issue. There is a new MarieDB version 10.1.38 that I would like to upgrade too. yum update should upgrade to that new version but its not listed. Are you saying that 10.1.38 will be in conflict with centmin? If the version isn't in conflict with centmin. How does a person go about upgrading said version? And why isn't it listed as upgrade??

    Thanks,
    Itworx4me

    If you're on mariadb 10.1 branch i.e. 10.1.37 and there's a 10.1.38 update but it isn't showing then the problem is the geographical mirror for mariadb has yet to make it available so you need to wait you can try yum clean all and update and see if it is there - otherwise only thing you can do is wait for mirror to update
    Code (Text):
    yum clean all
    yum update --disableplugin=priorities --enablerepo=remi

    You would think if it were release well over a month ago it would be available. I have never ran into an issue of upgrading a branch of MariaDB after you have posted it on centmin. Guess its a waiting game...

    Thanks for your help,

    @eva2000 Do you have to recompile php to show the current version of mysql? I ran this code:
    Code (Text):
    mysql -V
    mysql Ver 15.1 Distrib 10.1.38-MariaDB, for Linux (x86_64) using readline 5.1

    It shows that I have 10.1.38 installed. But php is reporting that I am still using 10.1.37. Do I have to recompile php for php to show the correct version?

    Thanks,
    Itworx4me
