Notable Changes

MariaDB can no longer be compiled with the OpenSSL version 0.9.8 and below. Last 0.9.8 release was in December 2015, it is out of support and is no longer getting security fixes.
MariaDB Backup is now beta
As per the MariaDB Deprecation Policy, this will be the last release of MariaDB 10.1 for Ubuntu 16.10 "Yakkety"

There's always a risk in either not upgrading or upgrading as both may have underlying bugs in the version you stay on or upgrade to. To be safe, always backup mysql databases before upgrading

I've already upgraded via Centminmod and things are smooth but does restarting mysql only change the version number as seen in the above posts or does it have another effect that warrants me to backup before restarting?

restarts are fine.. it's upgrade process that can have potential for issues requiring backing up before upgrading.

Alright because I just upgraded but haven't restarted yet (not sure if that second part was important). I wanted to make a backup of my database but my CPU usage gets to 100% when I use the mysqldump command.

Reason I asked is because when restarting nginx, it sometimes says "fail" depending on a bad config and everything seems normal until nginx gets restarted.

CPU load optimal is 1.0 per cpu thread so 8 cpu thread normal = 8x1 = 8.0. 16 cpu server normal is 16x1 = 16.0

so cpu load of 8 for

2 cpu server = 8/2 = 4.0 load average

4 cpu server = 8/4 = 2.0 load average

8 cpu server = 8/8 = 1.0 load average

When you type top command, hit number 1 to break down per cpu stats

So on a 4 cpu server ideal is 4.0 or 400% and under. So if you have 100% cpu load on 4 cpu server = 100/400 = 0.25 cpu load utilisation = 25% cpu utilisation

I haven't restarted mysql yet. Just afraid of running into errors like how I did when restarting nginx.
