Yeah it's basically $20 per 25,000 emails for 1st 500k and then $18 per 25,000 from 500,001 to 1st 1million + minimum cost of $10/month for mailchimp pro account and no more using Mandrill for campaign/newsletters, for that you use Mailchimp and their user based cost pricing Pricing | MailChimp

So from Growing Business | MailChimp if you're newsletter has 10,000 email addresses and you use to send 10,000 emails via mandrill to those users, then it would of cost you $9.9.5 for the first 25k emails per month.

    upload_2016-2-27_2-49-59.png

But with change, you need to send that 10,000 emails for newsletter via Mailchimp at $75/month

    upload_2016-2-27_2-50-34.png

And if you have non-newsletter transactional email volume of say 2 emails per user per day, 10k x2 x30 = 600k emails per month, Mandrill old cost = 124.95

    upload_2016-2-27_2-52-59.png

    New cost would be $18 per 25k block = 24x18 = $432/month
    • Mandrill old cost total = $9.95 + 124.95 = $134.90/month
    • Mandrill + Mailchimp new cost total = $75 + 432 = $507/month = 3.75x times more !
Based on Email - Mandrill users will be required to have a paid monthly MailChimp account | Centmin Mod Community to compare, 600K emails from other providers would be:

    • Amazon SES 600K = 600 x 0.10 = $60/month
    • Sparkpost 600K = $44.99/month + 600-200 = 400x0.2 = $80 overages = $124.99/month 500K X 0.2 overages + $24.99 = 124.99/month
    • Mailgun 600K = $281.50/month or via Rackspace.com account $267.50/month
    • Sendgrid 600K = Lite plan 600 x 0.10 = $60/month or Essentials plan 100K with overages = $394.95/month or on 700K plan $399.95/month
    • Pepipost 600K = 600/5 x $1 = $120/month for opened emails only
    • Elasticemail 600K = 600-25 = 575 x 0.19 = $109.25/month
    • Authmailer 600K = 12.49/month or $149.90/yr 1st 100k and then $10 per 100k overages = 5x10 = $50 + 12.49 = $62.49/month

I have no idea how the CFO and the CEO approved the new plan. I guess they feel that their service is so good, people will pay more.

well according to post here, they have a large market share for transactional emails so probably thought overall they'll come out ahead $$$ wise

from that 600K + 10k subscriber example above, mandrill could afford to loose 50% of their transactional volume and still come out ahead on the new pricing i think ?

i think competitors like sparkpost and sendgrid probably could ramp up their efforts even further, give mandrill refugees a further 10% discount if they're willing to post on their own twitter, facebook, google+, blog and forums a detailed account of why they are changing and moving from mandrill. That would be one big marketing and PR and SEO boost for the competitor :)

Well, if you look hard enough, pretty sure all transactional email providers will have problems with hotmail/yahoo just due to sheer number of servers and the way hotmail/yahoo use various spam lists i think. Haven't looked into whether sparkpost, sendgrid, mailgun etc have such issues though.

Quick google-fu for sendgrid - the documentation is there as IP being on spam lists is a probability :)
Interesting for List-Unsubscribe header for Hotmail
Probably explains why so many hotmail/outlook emails mark emails as spam due to graymail feature ?

And Microsoft Changes List-Unsubscribe Requirements - Return Path

Elasticemail blog post Where to move from Mandrill? -
    interesting TOS item Terms
You need to provide address and other info ! Sort of defeats whois privacy !

Not sure I'd be able to use them because of this ? :(

Edit submitted a ticket to Elasticemail support and seems it's just for their eyes only ?
    Got more clarification
Not inspiring if Elasticemail's activation email went to my spam box heh

Using elasticemail as users report like Amazon SES and Authmailer, it hides the origin server IP address as well. Just something useful in future if or when I require moving to a DDOS protection solution on a new IP :)

    They support hotmail's required List-Unsubscribe header :D

I found it interesting that MailChimp is promoting a competitor in their blog. This has to be one of the biggest mistakes in corporate business in awhile. How do you just let all those customers leave your platform? It makes no sense to me. They must be losing a lot of money on people using the Mandrill free email plan.

Maybe it's not just that, maybe there's a higher proportional amount of work and effort with spam listings with the free tier that is ruining their IPs reputation ? That could in long term be problematic. But who knows.

Updated above post for elasticemail, seems profile details is for their eyes only for anti-spam :)
