For Linode users like myself who are suffering from Linode's datacenter DDOS attackers, have you thought about any alternative web hosting solutions as back up plans ?

I use Linode Fremont, CA for this forum and my dedicated piwik analytics server and use Singapore Linode for my centminmod.com Singapore segment in my geo latency cluster and love Linode and right now will wait to see how Linode reacts in terms of plans for future implementations to prevent such attacks i.e. announce DDOS protection plans.

But if Linode does still suffer, then us Linode folks need alternative hosting options. So have you folks on Linode started thinking about contingency plans and alternative web hosts if you can no longer wait out Linode's unfortunate DDOS attacks ?

So what's your criterias for choosing alternative web hosting ? For me it is
    • US West Coast with minimum 500Mbps to 1Gbit network connectivity on server
    • 2-4 cpu cores minimum for non-forum sites and 4 cpu cores min for forum sites
    • 512-1024MB for CentOS 6 and 1-2GB for CentOS 7 for non-forum sites and 2-4GB for forum sites.
    • good disk i/o
    • preferably Intel Ivy Bridge, Haswell or Skylake based processors with better AES-NI processor support
    • I also use Centmin Mod LEMP curl one line installer as a sort of benchmark for overall server performance so install time ~1000 seconds is okay, between 800-1000 seconds is good and <650 seconds is awesome :D

    Yeah!
For the past few days, I'm already searching for better alternative.
    Ramnode, Versaweb and SoYouStart.

    My main criteria are:
    • Fast CPU, At least 3ghz
    • Fast SSD, Ramnode/Linode similar disk performance
    • Fast Network, 500 Mbps and up
    • ASIA / West Coast USA

Yeah geographic location wise @RoldanLT and I have pretty much the same requirements :)

If you come across other alternative web hosting providers, post them here. I have a few I am testing out first then will share (I only ever recommend web hosts I use myself or my clients have used successfully) :)

A Small Orange is also STILL going through a DDoS attack going on day 5 or 6 I think. Needless to say, I've been quite busy the last few days giving people a new home lol!

I was with Linode for my primary site, but I left last year to move to a dedicated server with ReliableSite.

Dedicated server prices have come down so much, for a larger site like mine VPS services just aren't worth it. I am actually saving about $20 a month from Linode, and I get twice the RAM, 4x storage space, and better performance (NewRelic stats showed my page creation times dropped from ~60ms to ~40ms after going dedicated with the same software versions & configurations). I know I could probably cut costs even more if I used multiple servers to host different services, but I like having everything on one box to keep maintenance simple.

I really like ReliableSite's DDoS protection (that always scared me with Linode, I heard they null-route you if you get attacked) and their support has been very responsive. However... they have not lived up to their name as their network has been very unreliable. From what I can infer, they have problems configuring their Brocade switches, which either crash or dramatically slow down IPv6 traffic. It happened about 4 or 5 times last year. I'm still with them because their service and value is otherwise great (and my site is not "mission critical"), but it is an annoyance.

For smaller, extra services that I run (a small website that a group in my community runs and an RTMP relay server for live streams) I use the $5 droplets from Digital Ocean in their London facility.
For me, DDoS protection is important, but so is location. I really only look for hosts in the Northeast U.S., preferably New York/New Jersey, because 30% of my traffic is from the United States and another 40% is from Western Europe. I also need 1TB of disk space because I host a lot of large attachments on my forum and I like a long expiration time on the XenForo image proxy, they use ~300GB alone.

Yeah dedicated will have better response times .. lucky you have US East requirements. I would of used Reliablesite.net if they had a US West locale heh

The Linode DDOS attacks also brings up an interesting question to ask prospective web hosts who are currently without DDOS protection. The question to the prospective web host would be:
    • If your hosting network was directly DDOS attacked constantly for 7+ days constantly, what would you do or what contingency plans do you have in place to mitigate the negative affects and downtime experienced by all your customers ? Do you have future plans to roll out DDOS protection across your network ?

I would allow 24 hours to pass before making a judgment call. Anything past the 24 hour mark, I'm rebuilding at another providers location and deploying backups. ManageWP makes this task very simple to "Clone" an existing account anywhere at anytime. Knowing my luck, I would move all accounts and by the time I reached the last one, It would be over. :banghead: :wtf:

    From Linodes IRC

Will be interesting to see what's said and hopefully what they plan on doing to reduce the affects of future DDOS attacks.

Nice i had a look at ManageWP and that cloning process looks nice. I have been working a Centmin Mod Nginx vhost account transfer script which can clone/migrate an Nginx vhost site from one Centmin Mod LEMP server to another Centmin Mod LEMP server - similar to cPanel's account transfer but via shell scripting ;) Of course it's another feature for Centmin Mod Premium User Membership set :D

Thanks for that.. yeah I don't see how they would be able to get away without some form of DDOS protection for 2016 and beyond !

It looks like they are finally moving away from pure facility provided transit. With the typical teething problems of rolling out a new network design in a rush.

ManageWP has been a fantastic tool for me. Cloning/transferring/ backing up/ managing has been a breeze. It's expensive but well worth it when your dealing with multiple WP sites.

Your cloning feature would be awesome! Would make things much easier in case of a disaster like Linode to make transferring to a new VPS provider simple. But it's really not that hard considering the wp-content directory is the only vital directory to be transferred. Everything else is just stock WP files. So setup a new account via menu #22, Download the sites main config file from the old vps, upload it to the new VPS, upload the existing wp-content directory, chown everything and off you go!

Yeah right now the Centmin Mod transfer script I am working on isn't that fine grain controlled yet for per vhost transfers. It just transfers and syncs across the entire Nginx configuration, vhost configs, vhost site files + mysql database data + mysql user privileges/grants altogether to a new Centmin Mod based server :)
