Liquid Web commits to create new innovations for Cloud Sites customers by investing in the platform, its employees and the City of San Antonio

LANSING, Mich.– August 8, 2016 – Liquid Web, a $90 million web hosting and cloud services provider devoted to delighting customers, today announced it has signed an agreement to purchase Rackspace® (NYSE: RAX) Cloud Sites business unit, which will remain in San Antonio.

Users of the Cloud Sites platform, who include designers, developers and digital agencies, should expect a seamless transition as Liquid Web and Rackspace work together to complete the transaction. In fact, Liquid Web plans to invest in developing innovative solutions on the Cloud Sites platform to better serve these savvy, skilled professionals who are dependent on a highly available and reliable hosting provider.

In 2014 Rackspace announced a strategic shift, moving away from commodity cloud compute and storage infrastructure and toward the managed cloud message, with a strong emphasis on its “fanatical support.” The move was an acknowledgment that Rackspace could no longer keep up with AWS, Microsoft Azure, and other top public cloud infrastructure providers. These days, in addition to offering its cloud services with support included, Rackspace also helps customers deploy their applications on top of AWS and Azure.

The cloud infrastructure market has gone through extensive consolidation. Most recently Samsung bought Joyent. Also CenturyLink acquired Savvis and Tier 3,EMC bought Virtustream, and IBM bought SoftLayer. In October HP announcedplans to shut down its Helion public cloud.
