Is it safe to use popular free VPNs to log in via SSH client?

    Sometimes I need to unblock my IP after a failed login attempt. That means free VPNs are the only way I can do this but I was wondering if it's safe to use the popular free options for a couple of seconds to unlock my real IP address and then exit the session.

    Or should I update my root password every time I do this?
