AMD’s high-end ThreadRipper CPUs could be with us as soon as next month according to the latest leak. The Ryzen 9 ‘ThreadRipper’ processors will range from 10 Cores / 20 Threads all the way up to a mammoth 16 Cores / 32 Threads for the flagship Ryzen 9 1998X.

On paper, the R9 1998X should be the most powerful processor in the world, enough to oust even Intel’s Extreme edition CPUs. It will have quad-channel DDR4 support, 180W TDP and utilises a modified version of the SP3 socket. This 4094-pin socket is huge in order to accommodate the large chip, meaning Ryzen 9 requires a totally different platform to the previous Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 5 processors, codenamed Whitehaven (X390/X399).

Intel Skylake-X Core i9

As per the leaked presentation, the i9 will be starting at hexacore/12 threaded i9-7800X, before going all the way up to a 12 core/24 threaded i9-7920X. It is not known though what would be the clock speed of the i9-7920X.

The physically massive Epyc chip sports 32 cores and 64 threads, 128 PCIe 3.0 lanes, and eight memory channels per socket for a total of 16 DDR4 channels and 32 DIMMs in a two-socket server. That's a potential maximum of 4TB of memory, which will come in handy for places like VFX render farms where a single frame of a film can consume gigabytes of memory.

probably as most vendors for past 8+ yrs have been Intel centric, so drivers and os compatibility wise AMD still will need work as I'd expect

Intel announces new Core X-series processors, features the new Core i9

Intel has announced the new Core X-series, the company's flagship series of enthusiast desktop processors. With the introduction of this series, Intel has also introduced the new Core i9 series of processors.

Based on the new X299/LGA2066 "Basin Falls" platform, the Core X-series has nine different products, of which five are being announced today and four will be arriving later. Customers will have a choice from 4 cores to 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 cores all the way at the top, making it one of the most diverse range on the market. Almost all models will have Intel's Hyper-Threading, thereby doubling the thread count.

Intel's Skylake-X and Kaby Lake-X CPUs will not be soldered

The world renowned overclocker der8auer has confirmed that Intel's upcoming Skylake-X and Kaby Lake-X CPUs will not be using a soldered IHS, a first for an Intel High-end desktop (HEDT) platform.

This presents a number of issues, the largest of which being the thermal performance of these new CPUs, especially when overclocked. It is already well known that non-soldered Intel CPUs can have huge thermal benefits when running with an aftermarket thermal interface material, creating the modern craze known as delidding for Intel CPUs.

With Skylake-X and Kaby Lake-X, Intel has decided to use a thermal compound/thermal interface material (TIM) to transfer heat from the CPU to the CPU's integrated heat spreader (IHS), allowing Intel to save time and money when manufacturing these new CPUs.

The problems that arise from using non-soldered CPUs occur because the TIM used by Intel will not have the same thermal conductivity as a directly soldered CPU, which will cause Intel's CPUs to run hotter, especially when overclocked.

Guess it will limit oc'ing due to thermal limits. Probably, not that bad if you plan to use it for non-oc'd gaming based dedicated hosting I suppose ? OVH Gaming servers are water cooled anyway.

Ryzen Threadripper will release this summer | CPU & Mainboard | OC3D News

AMD has confirmed that their new Ryzen Threadripper will be releasing in summer 2017, coming with up to 16 CPU cores and 32 CPU threads.

The company has also confirmed that all Threadripper CPU will come with quad channel memory support and a total of 64 PCIe lanes, which means that unlike Intel AMD will not be taking away PCIe lanes from lower end Threadripper SKUs.

This will allow Threadripper to be able to use up to four GPUs with full PCIe 3.0 16x bandwidth, something that is impossible on Intel's Skylake-X platforms, which maxes out at 44 PCIe 3.0 lanes.

Intel accidentally launches Xeon Gold and Xeon Platinum lineup for server market; Skylake uArchitecture, AVX-512 instruction set, H0 Stepping and more
Intel’s Xeon Gold and Platinum lineups go as high as 3.6 GHz clock speed with the low core variants (think Xeon Gold 5122) and as low as 2.0 GHz for some specific low power variants. The Xeon Gold lineup has the nomenclature of 61xx while the Platinum lineup follows the 81xx nomenclature for CPU naming convention. Let’s talk about the absolutely monster CPU that is lurking in this lineup though: the 28 core, 56 thread Xeon part.

The Intel Xeon Platinum 8180 is the part believed to have 28 cores and is clocked at an astounding 2.5 GHz core clock. This is very impressive for a processor with this amount of cores. It also has an L3 cache of 38.5 MB as well as a TDP of just 205 watts. The Skylake Purley platform will be divided between three major categories 2S, 4S and 8S/8S+. This includes the family range from Xeon E5 to Xeon E7. The expected nomenclature should assume the ‘v5’ suffix thanks to the Skylake microarchitecture present in the processors and includes the Xeon E5 2600 v5, Xeon E5 4600 v5, Xeon E7 4800 v5 and Xeon E7 8800 v5. The E5 family includes the dual socket and quad socket designs (2S and 4S) whileas the E7 family includes the 8 socket design structure with the C602 chipset and a scalable memory buffer.

One of the biggest advancements that Skylake will have is the Intel Omnipath Architecture integration which will be called Storm Lake (Generation 1). The PCH will be codenamed Lewisburg and will also ship with updated Ethernet controllers. Another very important point to note is that the platform will be scalable up to 8 sockets – which is frankly an absolutely insane amount for CPUs working in tandem in any given configuration

Now coming to the main rumor, BitsnChips over at their main twitter feed suggests that the most entry level Ryzen Threadripper chip with 16 cores and 32 threads would be priced at 849 US. This pricing is much lower than what Intel has priced their own 16 core part which will retail at $1699 US. By entry level, it’s suggested that AMD will have multiple 16 core parts shipping with different clock configurations and featuring XFR support. So we can expect higher prices for the faster clock variants but having a 16 core chip under $1000 US is still pretty impressive considering AMD has recently shown strong multi-threading performance against Intel’s offering in several general and core intensive benchmarks.
