Intel’s 3D XPoint-based DIMMs are electrically and physically compatible with DDR4, and offer a four-fold increase in capacity. Intel also says the memory offers massive performance benefits without modifications to your OS or applications.

So if all that sounds good, why the grousing? The problem, it seems, is how Intel is rolling out support. While the 3D XPoint DIMM is electronically compatible and pin-compatible with DDR4, Intel’s compatibility solution is proprietary.

Rick Merritt of EETimes first chronicled the unhappy reactions to Intel’s news here. Merritt points out that despite Intel’s claim of being electrically compatible, company officials conceded an entirely new CPU and new extensions will be required to access 3D XPoint.

Intel Demos 3D XPoint Platform - Reveals Real Life Benchmarks of its Optane Based SSDs Against NAND Counterparts

The event in question was Intel’s “Nonvolatile Storage Solutions (Non-Volatile Memory Solution Group) ” presented by Vice President of Intel China, Yang Xu (Ian Yang). In the live demo, Intel demonstrated that an SSD to SSD transfer peaked out at approximately 1.73 GB/s – which is already pretty damn fast. An Optane to Optane based storage transfer peaked out at roughly 2.09 GB/s, not because of lack of speed on the SSD’s part but rather due to the bottleneck constraints of the interface being used for the transfer. As the test progressed however, the transfer rate of the NAND based SSD fell down to 284 MB/s while as the Optane based SSD more or less maintained its strong momentum. darn delays till 2017 Intel's Optane XPoint DIMMs pushed back – source • The Register

In the week of Intel's Developer Forum we have heard its Optane XPoint SSDs and DIMMs may be delayed.

We are hearing that the first version of XPoint chips can only be used for SSDs. A second, more developed version is needed to make XPoint for DIMMs. That means XPoint DIMMs may not appear until 2018, which would give competing non-volatile DIMMs more time within which to establish themselves. If true, this means Diablo and Netlist get more breathing space.

Intel’s Optane SSDs employ an Intel ASIC as part of their control function. We are informed that this ASIC’s design, which was started some time ago, made assumptions about the characteristics of the media which have not been borne out as the XPoint chips have been delivered from the IMTF Lehi plant.

Our source said this controller area problem has contributed to the XPoint SSD’s relatively poor performance advantage over NAND SSDs, a mere 10X performance boost instead of the potential 1,000 times better than NAND. This may delay Intel’s Optane XPoint SSD production availability until 2017, the source claimed.

Intel's Optane technology is already shipping in the form of storage, but you'll have to wait until next year to buy Optane memory modules.

Optane is a new class of nonvolatile memory and storage based on 3D Xpoint, which was developed jointly by Intel and Micron.

Intel's first Optane products, announced this month at CES, are low-capacity SSDs that fit into the storage slots of PCs.

Optane memory DIMMs are different. They're intended to replace DRAM in servers and PCs. The DIMMs will fit into DDR4 slots.

Intel has started shipping the first Optane DIMMs for testing and hopes to release final products next year.

In demonstrations by Intel, Optane SSDs have performed 10 times faster than conventional SSDs. PC makers have said that game play, PC bootup and applications are all faster with Optane SSDs.

Intel today announced that its upcoming Optane non-volatile memory will ship in the second quarter of the year as 16GB and 32GB M.2 expansion cards.

Optane memory will be available as an option for new Intel-based client platforms, including Intel 7th Gen Core (Kaby Lake), and as a standalone component. Platforms and motherboards supporting Intel Optane technology will be labeled "Optane Ready" to indicate their compatibility.

Intel unveiled Intel Optane Memory along with sharing details about Intel 7th generation Core processors.
