Wrote about it here: Railgun + XenForo = Incredible International Speeds

We could have gotten way with a cheaper server but we are still at the same price we were paying before and with astronomical improvements all around.

I wish we would have made the switch to OVH + Railgun sooner. Glad we are there now!

Have to check out Railgun. Glad to hear your liking OVH. I've been nothing but happy with them.

$200 a month is pricey for 1 website. Of course, if the site is large and making money, I guess it's not so bad.

Good to know it's a good service. There are so many choices out there.

yeah the maths just aligned well with your budget - before $500/month vs now $300/m server + $200/m cloudflare biz :)

seems at a certain price point, cloudflare biz might make sense for a site(s) :)

Honestly I wish our database wasn't so large. Ram eats into our costs greatly. Which is why I was happy to find OVH.

We are sitting at around 96GB of ram used of 128 now. Innodb Buffer pool is at 80GB and almost full!

We did. I just wish we didn't have to think about ram first when looking at servers since it is the most expensive part of servers these days.

Actually, ram to certain point is still cheap. Real problem is disk capacity. Try spec'ing hardware for a server that requires 6TB of SSD like speed performance. Such storage arrays would be magnitudes more expensive than memory up to a certain point :) Then there's the backup configuration for 6TB of data hehe.

FYI, i was playing with OVH configuration for larger disk configs and something like 8x 800GB SSD + 8x6TB config for dual Xeons was like US$7,700+ per month :D

Yeah you wonder why i limit forum attachments uploads to max 1MB per upload heh - keeping disk usage in check for the long term potential running costs is important :)

We avoid photo or video heavy forums/sites like the plague.

Very interesting stuff, BamaStangGuy, thanks for sharing.

Your site loads very fast for me here in the Eastern/Midwest USA. One front-end optimization I would recommend doing for your forum is to set some dimensions on your banner ad units. The page loads much faster than the ads, so the page ends up shifting around quite a bit as the ads load and render, making the page "feel" slower than it really is.
