@eva2000 when do you expect centminmod to be in the beta for supporting CentOS 8 ?

I had a look and it looks like its still in your development, just wondering if we are talking days, weeks or months ?

    Thanks in advance

You can see sticky for CentOS 8 development at CentOS 8.x - Centmin Mod CentOS 8 Compatibility Worklog. The hold up is all 3rd party YUM repos for CentOS 8 having still some missing of YUM packages not available in their CentOS 8 that they have in CentOS 7.

It's not just what Centmin Mod requires but software/web apps that end users may require which I would not have forseen. I don't want folks to start installing on CentOS 8 only to find out their specific web apps won't work due to packages they need that aren't available and I didn't know of. You can track some of the package requests and package bugs due to CentOS/Redhat 8 differences in EPEL 8 bug tracker here.

The delays are also due to some EPEL 8 YUM packages requiring other dependencies from other missing EPEL 8/CentOS 8 YUM packages. So it's a cascading effect of everyone waiting on everyone else for YUM dependencies in CentOS 8 and 3rd party YUM repos due to the drastic differences between CentOS 8 and CentOS 7.

@eva2000 Thanks for the swift reply - looks like how long is a piece of string as we would say in England ;)

So another question - If I run with CentOS7 instead of waiting for 8 what's the ease of upgrading from 7 to 8 in the future without any breakages ?

@cloud9 Upgrading from 7 to 8 is as easy as pie as long as you have working backups, you can fall back on (so you can always try again).
I'm sure @eva2000 will make a good transition by then.

As there will probably be a lot other candidates interested in migrating from 7 to 8, when the time is right.

AFAIK, like CentOS 6 to 7, 7 to 8 doesn't have in place upgrading support. You'd need to migrate data from CentOS 7 server to a CentOS 8 server. Redhat 6 had 7 in place upgrade IF you didn't rely on 3rd party YUM repos like EPEL. But CentOS 6 to 7 don't and doubt CentOS 7 to 8 will either.

I doubt there will be CentOS 7 to 8 in place upgrade support due to massive YUM repo and package name changes of which some are outlined at CentOS 8.x - Centmin Mod CentOS 8 Compatibility Worklog.

That is why learning how to migrate data between servers is important as outlined at Centmin Mod Site Data Migration Guide. With such tools you can migrate data between any OS and versions when the time comes. You can practice test data migrations over and over between Centmin Mod servers without changing DNS to see if all is ok until you're comfortable doing a live migration of data.
