Microsoft Corp. on Monday announced it has reached an agreement to acquire GitHub, the world’s leading software development platform where more than 28 million developers learn, share and collaborate to create the future. Together, the two companies will empower developers to achieve more at every stage of the development lifecycle, accelerate enterprise use of GitHub, and bring Microsoft’s developer tools and services to new audiences.

Yeah saw that news. Probably staying but not really an issue (unless you're reason is potential concerns over privacy issues) as Centmin Mod Github code is mirrored to Gitlab (public) and Bitbucket (private) repositories too Centmin Mod Git Repository Online Status. But Gitlab version code as it's mirrored, the code still assumes Github.com is main source repo by default unless CMGIT variable is changed. Unfortunately, haven't really tested Gitlab CMGIT switch as yet. Probably should

Since Satya replaced Ballmer as CEO, Microsoft is not the same it used to be and they are a lot more open to the community, sharing code very often, many tools and frameworks. VSCode is one great example.

I have been collecting information here and there and i see a lot of people excited with this move from Microsoft.

I'll agree that things have improved. We'll see what happens.

I've seen pretty much a negative reaction on Twitter from the people I follow and list. That's just my group though. I'm sure a lot of Microsoft / Windows people love the move... and that's a huge group.

Google does exactly the same with their Google (Gmail) single login account, but you don't hear anyone about it.
Linkedin is now in the hands of Microsoft for almost 2 years, without the requirement of MSN.

The new CEO of GitHub will be Nat Friedman. Who has shown more often with Xamarin and Ximian having a good vision.

Microsoft promises to keep GitHub independent and open

During a conference call this morning, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, incoming GitHub CEO (and Xamarin founder) Nat Friedman and GitHub co-founder and outgoing CEO Chris Wanstrath laid out the plans for GitHub’s future under Microsoft.

The core message everybody on today’s call stressed was that GitHub will continue to operate as an independent company. That’s very much the approach Microsoft took with its acquisition of LinkedIn, but to some degree, it’s also an admission that Microsoft is aware of its reputation among many of the developers who call GitHub their home. GitHub will remain an open platform that any developer can plug into and extend, Microsoft promises. It’ll support any cloud and any device.

Unsurprisingly, while the core of GitHub won’t change, Microsoft does plan to extend GitHub’s enterprise services and integrate them with its own sales and partner channels. And Nadella noted that the company will use GitHub to bring Microsoft’s developer tools and services “to new audiences.”

Interesting GitLab’s high-end plans are now free for open source projects and schools

The fact that Microsoft is buying GitHub has left a lot of developers with a deep feeling of unease and a lot of them are now looking for alternatives. One of those is GitLab and that company has decided to strike the iron while it’s hot. To attract even more developers to its platform, GitLab today announced that its premium self-hosted GitLab Ultimate plan and its hosted Gold plan are now available for free to open source projects and educational institutions.

The interest in moving to GitLab is very real as the company tells me that it saw more than 14,300 unique visitors to its site after the GitHub news was announced yesterday and that those developers opened more than 100,000 new repositories on GitLab.com. Most of these surely tried GitLab’s free but limited Core plan, which includes all of the basics but which isn’t really suited for larger projects.

The Gold and Ultimate offerings, however, would typically cost $99 per user per month and include virtually every feature you can think of, including all the basics you want from a code repository up to tools for publishing roadmaps, dependency and container scanning, Kubernetes cluster monitoring and, in the near future, tools for license and portfolio management.

One caveat here is that the free Gold and Ultimate plans do not include support. Developers and open source projects that do want support, though, can still buy it at $4.95 per user and month.
