Update: The issue has been resolved. Stated fault; an abusive VM on the host node.

Forgive my ignorance, but I went for KVM to eliminate the potential issues from shared VM's on the same node, as I thought they were more independent than OPenVZ. Is this not the case?

Unfortunately, both KVM and OpenVZ can get abusive neighbours just less with KVM.

OK, so this theme has been continuing all week. The disk I/O hits a peak, my websites grind to a halt, I put a call in and they come back with its an abusive member and they've suspended them.

    Screenshot_6.png Screenshot_8.png

If we now look at it over a month, you can see how often it occurs. Its also obvious that they don't actively monitor, but manage the node on a reactive nature based on complaints. The peak is just short of 4G. You can see as the month progresses how the gaps have improved, following my complaints, but still.

    Screenshot_9.png

So whilst they may be cheap, its not a reliable service. Add the the fact a call takes a long time to be answered, even at the highest priority (around 4 hours).

    Advice for moving forward?

shame to see this - probably expected due to the price. Great for Centmin Mod initial noobie testing I suppose. If you want reliable at least RamNode, Linode, DigitalOcean, and Vultr are usual go to.

Not sure if this is a work based firewall thing, but those links contain :444 which I have to strip out for them to function correctly.

I've been going back and forth a little putting support calls in with every slow down and providing a stats screenshot each time confirming the disk I/O from their own stats display on my customer panel.

These are my stats for the last 24 hours. Bear in mind that every time I get a peak in the I/O, my site does not respond. These stats appear to reflect the node, rather than my specific VPS. I'm measuring similar stats for my own usage using monitorix and the figures are nowhere near these peaks. So 10 periods of downtime or very lethargic response times in 24 hours, of which I personally witnessed 6 events.

    upload_2017-6-20_23-10-35.png

My last message to them was a little short.
"My server runs perfectly fine and I am happy with it except for when there are high I/O disk writes as per the chart attached. These are not caused by me, but usually by someone else on the node. Whenever the chart peaks, my service suffers. As you can see it happens multiple times a day.

I do not want a standard try it now response. I want to know exactly what the fault was and I want to know how you are going to prevent it happening again in the future. I've been pretty patient, but this sort of regular down time cannot be tolerated for much longer."

    Their reply?
"Sorry to hear this is not working out for you. We would like to offer a refund for the unused period and cancel your service."

So if I understand this correctly, rather than sort out the abusive neighbours on the node, they want to cancel my service because I'm complaining about it. Wow!

Guess you get what you pay for. So probably best to find a new web host.

    viralpoet,

How did you generate the charts in your post?

I run Apache bench every now and then and keep track of my transactions per second.
I just got the $25 deal ( it is still available! ) this month and my transaction rate varies from 40/s to 300/s.
I expect this to vary, but this is a bit much.

I would like to be able to complain with some facts to back me up.

    Thanks
    -John Scott

Its in the usage graphs of your client area. HOwever based on my experience, if you dont like it they'll just cancel you.

I've been monitoring a new server and plan to move this week.
In hostus news, this is todays I/O so the problem is obviously getting worse. 9G peak hit on this graph over the last 24 hours and lots around the 2-3G mark.

    upload_2017-6-25_20-56-41.png

    And over the last month

I'm not seeing such disk i/o usage on my HostUS 2GB OpenVPS $25/yr servers, you sure it isn't your own server ? check via sysstat's sar tool and pidstat tool
    Code (Text):
    sar -u

    Code (Text):
    sar -u 1 10

    Code (Text):
    pidstat -d 1 10

use the commands i suggested.. sometimes monitoring software has their own resource overhead when running themselves i.e glances vs top command etc

so yes sar reports ~4.82% disk iowait with peak of around 13% iowait for past 24hrs stats so some

but pidstat reports monitorix.cgi itself has disk write usage up to 1404 KB/s so as I suspected monitorix itself has disk I/O overhead

doesn't rule out your VPS node having nosiy neighbours though

you can start 2 ssh windows one running
    Code (Text):
    pidstat -d 1 20

    and other
    Code (Text):
    sar -u 1 20

to get a profile per timestamp

its probably a good time to check it as my SSH connecting is grinding to a halt which is usually a sign the i/o is bad,

mysql and monitorix processes seem to be the highest disk i/o consumers but yeah 26% avaerage iowait with peak of 57% iowait does lend more to vps host node being busy.

Time to find a new VPS host/plan for your sites. So far touch wood my 5x hostus OpenVZ VPS are still fine right now.

Wow it's nearly 1 yr since I purchased 5x HostUS.us $25/yr 2GB OpenVZ VPS discussed in this thread and I have just renewed them all for another full year :D

For the price, they make excellent test VPSes for Centmin Mod users :D
