It's sad that people have to make other peoples life hell - it's probably some fat dude in his moms basement that has nothing better to do then to DDoS a ligament, honest business trying to make a living just like we all are. - it's sad..

It is sad.. bright side will be Linode will eventually come out of this with new DDOS mitigation measures in place so can only get better. Well that's the hope - would save me time in future hunting down DDOS protected providers :D

It's also sad that a serious situation has to arise BEFORE any action takes place to prevent this from happening. People automatically "assume" it wont happen to them but in reality we're all vulnerable to this. I use VULTR exclusively. They offer DDoS protection per VM so I am "assuming" they have a much larger scale of a system in place for the Hostnodes.

DDoS attacks are so pointless and childish acts of being an @sshole. People are figuring out ways to get around even the extreme DDoS prevention systems that are hardwired at the DC's

Indeed.. Vultr has a longer history dealing with DDOS attacks from their parent company Choopa.com and origins in gaming hosting where DDOS attacks were more prevalent if my research is correct. So they already had such DDOS mitigation infrastructure in place.

I can sort of understand why Linode hasn't done DDOS protection yet due to costs. I myself also have such approach for this forum, I could get ahead of the things and start off with 3rd party DDOS protection or getting a web host with such but the added cost may add 100s of $$$ per month to my costs and I may not have such attacks for 12-18months, so that's several thousand dollars gone for a forum which doesn't derive substantial revenue. As opposed to just jumping on DDOS protection when I need it. Not that it hasn't stopped me researching DDOS protected web hosts over the years :)

Of course Linode is in a slightly different situation in that it's affecting their income and clients trust and confidence in their services.

But can we expect Linode to still keep their competitive pricing after rolling out possible millions of dollars on DDOS mitigation measures for everyone of their datacenters ? 2016 will be an interesting year for Linode and us Linode users !
