    Hi

I'm Claudio from Argentina and I signed up on this community to start learning about server administration. I just got tired of installing cPanel every time and try to change settings through a control panel instead of understand how MySQL works for example and how set up a server.
I usually have to pay a sysadmin to fix some issues and when I ask about why some changes were made I just don't receive the explanations I'm looking for so I guess the best way is try to do everything by myself :)

Please, if you know any tutorial or guide I'll really appreciate your help. I know the first is learn Linux commands but I'm more interested in broke and play during the process, at least is what I consider the best practice to understand why you have to do something and what happens if you made a mistake.

    Hi @Claudio

Also a warm welcome from me to this community.. Enjoy your stay here. I tell you - @eva2000 puts alot of work in some very good and fine guides and information for us users of centminmod.. Start with the getting started guide and then use the search function on this board.. Last, ask your question and I'm sure somebody can help you out.

Welcome, @Claudio! You have found the right place.

I think Centminmod is one of the best kept secrets in server management scripts, but I expect word will get out over the next year or so and it will become very popular soon. It's exciting to be here from the beginning. :)

Yes! It's some kind of Windows XP uE (Unattended Edition). I'd love to know if there is any free VPS provider just to test Centmin installation and play with it.
I know there are VPS providers like Linode where you pay per hour but I was hoping to test this few days and don't pay. I can also use VMWare but I'd like to test this on a live environment.

you can get a RamNode Premium 256-512MB VPS (openvz based) for as low as $28.80/yr paid yearly for 256MB one or $54/yr for 512MB and use CentOS 6 for testing :) Then you can test all year round :D

I just did a Google search for "free vps" and it seems there are a lot out there. I'd say the quality is terrible but if you're just wanting to play around with Centminmod that may be all that you need.

I would probably recommend trying it out on your own virtual machine. It will be almost exactly the same as a "live environment" (without the network latency) and it will be faster/easier to clone or reconfigure the VM as you need.

Yeah my testing workflow is usually

VirtualBox local PC test > Test VPS > Live production Servers

fyi Centmin Mod installs times for them are

    • Virtualbox = ~1400-1600 seconds slow due to my Australian location
    • Test VPS & Live production servers = ~600-1100 seconds

yeah local PC tests won't work with 123.09beta01le2 branch as letsencrypt ssl tests for domain name DNS pointing to ip of server which for local PC would be incorrect
