With latest announced Google Chrome changes to deprecate their old Chrome extension API, Manager V2 (specifically their webRequest API) and switch to newer Chrome extension API, Manager V3 (declarativeNetRequest API), ad blocking extensions such as Adblock, uMatrix and uBlock Origin will less effective. So are folks here switching web browsers from Google Chrome ? If so which web browser alternatives are you switching to or have already switched to ?

I mainly use Opera web browser (Chromium) as my every day with Google Chrome, Google Canary and FireFox dev and nightly for testing compatibility with my sites. I might give Brave web browser a try though.

There's also some good guides on Chrome alternative web browsers below:

I use chrome because I need easy access to multiple profiles. Having multiple websites and multiple social accounts, I need to have multiple browsers open at the same time. Right now typing this I have 6 profiles open each completely separate from each other. Since I can't be logged into 6 different twitter accounts (example) at the same time, it's hard to use only one profile. Google Chrome is the best to use for multiple profiles IMO.

Every other browser makes you jump through hoops to switch / setup different profiles. Google Chrome it's really easy. Until I find a option which allows me easy access to multiple profiles, I'll be using Chrome. I'd really like to use Opera or Firefox, but their methods for switching to using multiple profiles is difficult.

I often wonder why it isn't more of a priority for the browser developers to incorporate multiple profiles. If I have multiple businesses and each profile is a completely separate business. It makes it really easy to jump between businesses without having to worry about logging out of social accounts and biz websites.

Compile your own chromium (probably to time consuming).

    Same for me.

If ad blocking is the only concern, I've been using Adguard desktop for quite some time - well worth the money for me.

Since the subject is adblock ...
I think there should be some warning here in the forum for those who use adblock, the ads they have here are not intrusive, so I see no reason to block them

Indeed though about that though my welcome new member private conversation message mentions not to use adblocks politely.

I can why that is important, those there's better ways of managing this by using social media account management apps, ie. Hootsuite so you can manage multiple social media accounts all in one app rather than having many browser windows open just for that usage case :)

I question the use of the word 'better'. I've searched other ways to manage the multiple social accounts (and everything else that is contained with property management) even trying Hootsuite and the lot. Nothing has yet provided the flexibility of multiple profiles. Most services cost money especially when you have multiple social accounts. If I would use Hootsuite I'd need to pay $129 a month, using Chrome profiles $0.

It's also super easy to fire up a new Chrome profile and add the necessary chrome extensions for that specific project. My ecom profile has all kinds of evaluation tools for various sites like Facebook Ads, Amazon FBA, etc. My development profile is specifically setup with the Chrome extensions which test and help develop. Having all these extensions installed in one profile would be a disaster. I'd have to turn off a bunch of extensions to just have a normal view.

For me each Chrome profile is like a file for a specific project. Bookmarks, extensions, history, cookies, everything is separated. Spanning everything out into different services seems like a nightmare to me when I can use something simple like Chrome profiles to contain a project. It's always worked great for me. Having multiple windows open is also a big plug. I can have 6 tweetdeck windows open at once and see what is happening on each account at a glance - like a stock trader.

I once had something bad happen in one of my Chrome accounts. I believe I install a malicious chrome extension or something, it was weird. It was contained in that specific profile. Instead of removing everything I just removed that profile.

I guess the new 20 something hipster is using an Apple Laptop to do everything which has 1 window, so the thought is one profile is all that's needed.

I wanted to switch to another browser which would reduce the overhead of using Chrome and its resource usage. But I couldn't find a single browser which could match the flexibility of Chrome's profiles. It's almost like the other browser makers didn't even consider multiple profiles. For me, better is having the ability to use multiple profiles and is the perfect solution for managing multiple businesses and keeping everything nice and tidy.

Interesting approach and work flow there. I might try playing with profiles more and see what's what. Thanks for sharing :)

Like I mentioned it's just like files folders. If you want to focus on a specific project, create a profile, and switch to the profile and you'll have everything for that specific project right in front of you. I like the ability to open the profile and all the correct windows are already open. I'm typing this right now in my development profile which CMM is on of the pinned tabs. Every time I open the dev profile, everything I need is already open and waiting for me. No wasting time opening windows of sites I use or searching for the last thing I was working on, etc. I open it and I'm ready to work.

I prefer the Firefox container implementation.

At the moment i am using 5 browsers to separate my work :D

No addons and no security issues no privacy issues by storing what i do online so i can sync later and you can view content of each browser side by side :p

I will look for both solutions above tonight :)

That's an interesting extension, good to know. :) Wish they would've set it up like Chrome vs. the tabs only.

Just checked and not Brave Browser (privacy browser) now has profiles like Google Chrome. This is a game changer for me. I'm probably going to start migrating to Brave soon. They have a slick browser the strips out all the Google Chrome tracking stuff.

I've been meaning to switch to brave for a while for my daily use.

Where I can I use firefox dev for, development, amazing css/console tools.

I also use a pi-hole and wireguard to an Algo vpn on a $5 Digital Ocean droplet - that seems to cut most of the ad stuff out.

I have been using Brave as well. As well as pi-hole DNS sink and Wireguard with my torguard service.

Switched to Brave a few months ago, love it. the xenforo 2 bug with the WYISWYG editor put the nail in the coffin for Firefox for me
