Most folks who use Gmail or Google services probably have 2 step verification enabled and use Google Authenticator on their mobile phones. I use this heavily for alot of my online web accounts with web hosting providers like Linode, Dropbox, Github, Facebook and various other accounts important to me.

However, the official Google Authenticator app has one annoying downside, you can not backup or transfer your registered 2 step verification accounts to other mobile devices so that they can exist on more than one mobile or tablet device simultaneously !.

    Alternative to Google Authenticator App

The solution I have found is an Google Authenticator alternative called Authenticator Plus. It allows you to automatically or manually sync, backup and restore all your 2 step verification accounts to either your Dropbox or Google Drive accounts as well as manually backup to your mobile phone's SD card. It also imports Google Authenticator existing 2 step verified accounts into Authenticator Plus :)

This means loosing or not having access to your mobile phone, isn't the end of the world as long as you have another mobile or tablet device with Authenticator Plus installed and your 2 step verified accounts imported over :D

So who here uses 2 step verification ? Would you be able to still log into your 2 step verified accounts if you lost your mobile phone ? Do you have a printed list of backup verification codes for each of your accounts as backup ?

not an option for me, using prepaid mobile plan - get charged for every SMS message I receive ! That would be alot for 2 factor authentication SMS messages with the number of services I use

Ha? You got charged for the SMS you received? That's not the normal practice here.

I use 2 factor, and have just got a new phone, so had to re-generate all my keys to enable it on my new Android phone. Going to look into AuthenticatorPlus now

    Have you seen Authy?

When I looked into this a bit ago, it was the best google-authenticator-replacement solution out there. It's also the only 2-factor app supported by CloudFlare.

Free, and lets you save/sync codes across devices, while still staying encrypted whenever on a remote server.

Just bumping this as this app is bloody awesome and useful, 2 mobiles and 2 tablets have Authenticator Plus installed and syncing all my 2 factor enabled services between all 4 devices, means I am never without access to my 2 step codes :D

Authy does the same thing--sync across all devices, and free. The one thing that's annoying is when using a service that used Authy for built-in 2-factor, you can only have one profile saved. The only site that I use that it's been a problem on is CloudFlare. However, you can't fix it by switching to another tool because server-side Authy implementations require Authy clients. I haven't looked into the crypto for GAuthPlus, but I read up pretty thoroughly on how Authy stores the seed number and was pretty satisfied that it's secure even if someone hacks Authy. Definitely worth checking into for GAuthPlus if you haven't yet, before you use them for syncing your data.

By "WinAuth" support. Does that mean I can sync it to my computer or no?

The app costs $3 bucks, i would need two phones to sync it and make the app useful?
