I am not a sysadmin, but I think Im doing fine, thanks to eva and centmin

today I was experiencing 504 errors on my server and was very angery as I thought Im under attack

I recovered a backup and it worked fine and the 504 again

then IREALISEDD that it is a wordpress plugin (chat) that their server is down and that afffected mine, problem solved when I DEACTIVATED the plaugin and now it will be deactivated for good :)

-during that down time, I said to myself; I shall move to a managed hosting, etc....

and I realized that the solid centmin was not the cause at all, love you centmin

    My questions to the pro:

-I was using Cpanel with GoDaddy in the past, and thanks god I was never hacked, now with centmin with my current level of sysadmin (entry level) shall I go on with VPS and keep the pro have a look on the server every now and then?

-someone told me, as long as u keep the server update, no problem,

moreover, I use google firewall plus CSF; I even block access to SSH and FTP unless I need them.

I don't use CloudFlare as its free plan, in my opinion, makes u loose the optimization u do on the server

Alot of managed hosts are for server itself, they don't handle web app level updates, security etc. So ultimately it comes down to you the owner learning and keeping web app level software up to date. Big one is wordpress keeping it up to date and being extra picky and cautious as to what wordpress plugins you use.
