Currently I'm using mailgun.com for delivering forum emails (notification/registration, etc.) from @mydomain.com.

I use a mydomain@gmail.com account for receiving any incoming emails.

So is it still necessary for me to go for a mail hosting service for my email@mydomain.com? And why?

    Not unless you want to.

Some sites you sign up to for your site require ownership verification and @domain.com email verification is normally one of the methods, but you shouldn't have too much trouble if you're OK with DNS or HTML file alternatives.
