hmm those cpu models are very very old !

Intel Xeon is from 2009 http://ark.intel.com/products/27218/Intel-Xeon-Processor-5150-4M-Cache-2_66-GHz-1333-MHz-FSB
    AMD is from 2011 http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K10/AMD-Phenom II X4 840 - HDX840WFK42GM.html

In comparison to AMD Phenom II X4-840, on single core performance a Intel Xeon E3-1230v2 is 2.3x times faster and on full multi-core the Intel Xeon E3-1230v2 is 3.16x times faster in terms of passmark scores http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Xeon-E3-1230V2-vs-AMD-Phenom-II-X4-840

Intel Xeon E3-1230v2 is 1.9x times faster than Intel Xeon 5150 single core and 5.15x times faster on multicore passmark scores http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Xeon-E3-1230V2-vs-Intel-Xeon-5150

What this essentially means is a single core on Intel Xeon E3-1230v2 is as fast as the whole Phenom II X4-840 or Xeon 5150 processor. i.e. 1 core E3-1230v2/v3 based VPS server to compare :)

Of course memory of 4GB or 8GB and disk space on above makes it a better value if you need memory or disk capacity more than cpu speed. And not to mention 20TB bandwidth, not many single core E3-1230 based VPS would have that bandwidth allocation :)

For the price and number of cores and bandwidth, the above would make nice static file proxy caching servers :)
