Wow who has been impacted by this global issue Huge Windows Blackout Hits Banks, Airports And More ? Looks like because systems are down, automated remote fixes aren't possible for folks will need to manually update and apply patch fixes for systems!

Seems like there were 2 unrelated issues - one for Miscrosoft Azure and one for Crowdstrike update impacting Microsoft Windows systems Statement on Falcon Content Update for Windows Hosts - crowdstrike.com

I saw an interesting Twitter thread on the cause of the issue. Looks like it was a null pointer in CrowdStrike's C++ code. As someone who was plagued by many null pointer issues in my computer science classes, it hits to close to home. :ROFLMAO:

I have to admit though, being a Mac user and Linux system administrator, I never really knew what CrowdStrike was...

Wonder if the saying any publicity is good publicity ? Or this will hurt CrowdStrike in the long term. I knew of CrowdStrike from Cloudflare circles as far as I know Cloudflare uses them as well.

But this outage has be thinking about my all Windows home/work/development computers. Only use Linux for servers.

Each year I have said maybe try Apple Macs for the first time and always put it off till next year. Maybe get a Mac Mini as a starter MacOS device?

Whether it's business or private. Forcing 'cloud'; based updates is starting to become more and more of a burden. CrowdStrike is enterprise based but private individuals are also suffering from the intrusive updates in larger sizes.

For example, my uncle who called me because he could no longer use his Windows computer with 200GB' of free space. What turned out: he once clicked on the question, whether he wanted to start using the 'optimal settings'. After which it turned out that everything had been transferred to a “free” Microsoft account (online), including OneDrive and he had too little online space. And whether he wanted to upgrade to buy additional space.

Or my niece with her new iPhone and “Capacity” of 1TB. As she could no longer take pictures because there would be no storage capacity. As it turned out, she was once asked about ideal settings and the photos have since been saved online by default through her Apple ID, regardless of the almost giga free storage on her own phone.

I'm close to this issue for one laptop/OneDrive setup. In the way that OneDrive allows you to select which cloud stored files are synced and located on local drive. If I opted to select all OneDrive cloud stored data to sync to local drive, I'd run closer to my local disk space limits. Looking forward to this coming Black Friday to see if there's new laptop deals :)

Looks like CrowdStrike also previously impacted Debian and Rocky Linux CrowdStrike also broke Debian and Rocky Linux earlier this year – hackers are taking advantage of Friday's chaos | TechSpot

I'm kind of surprised you aren't already using some flavor of desktop Linux! Your experience and expertise would make it a lot easier for you compared to most people who try to make the jump.

I switched to MacOS from Windows back in 2009.

You won't regret leaving Windows and switching to MacOS.
It's super stable, both hardware and software, and especially every update is bug-free.

Don't start with minimal specs, because maybe later you need to upgrade.
Start directly with a Mac Studio:

    Pair it with Studio Display:

Good luck! I've been with the MAC ecosystem since 2021.

Mac Studio probably too much $$$ for me and not portable. Though, there's always been the worry regarding multi-monitor support, too. I have 4 external monitors = 1x 27" 4K + 2x 24" 1080p + 1x 14" 1600p portable monitor on Windows 10 based laptops right now.

Same kind of story. Why I left the Apple ecosystem several years ago. It has simply become far too pricey, and upgrading hardware yourself is almost impossible, for some time.

I stopped since that they solder parts on and a bit of a nice MacBook costs 3k, excluding insurance.
