Yeah fact is, support and development costs money though Understandable given lifetime license with lifetime updates isn't sustainable long term.

I'll need to get a DirectAdmin license to learn the ropes myself given my nature of my work with clients - future won't be with cPanel for existing and future clients of mine it seems.

Really sucks for all those cPanel addon/plugin developers and ecosystem depending on cPanel business/clients - overnight they are now loosing a big chunk of their revenue $$$ !

Reminds me again of when Internet Brands took over vB and vB5 release, I had a huge amount of client/work from vB related server/clients that I built up over a decade via my reputation. In comes Internet Brands and alot of those clients switched from vBulletin to Invision Board and Xenforo forum software - some clients stayed with me though. But it was never the same again. So really feel the pain for those cPanel developers who relied on that tied to business !

That particular cPanel license is my own - it's what I use to keep my cPanel/WHM knowledge/tech expertise up to date, for developing my own cPanel/whm optimisation/testing and also what I use to test my cpanel to centmin mod importer development

But for my clients, some decide to stay on cPanel as they're only moving from US$15-32/month to US$30-45/month. Some switching to Centmin Mod and some will eventually move to DirectAdmin. And if required might eventually write a DirectAdmin to Centmin Mod importer for clients that need that too

Good thing about folks moving from cPanel to DirectAdmin is they can get accustomed to source compile related updates first. Get them ready for Centmin Mod later down the track

cPanel responds with updated announcement Update to Account-Based Pricing | cPanel Blog

Late last week, we announced a new licensing and pricing structure for cPanel. This change was the result of several months of conversations and modeling to ensure we understood as many use cases for cPanel & WHM hosting as possible. In the days following our announcement, we have heard from many of our Partners, both online and on the phone, and the feedback has been clear. Our analysis of use cases was incomplete, and we underestimated the amount of support that some of our Community require to implement these licensing model changes. This was a miss on our part, and we are sorry for any concern we have caused as a result.

Your feedback has been taken to heart, and we are making adjustments. Outlined below are changes that we feel are positives for our Partners and direct Customers.

For Partners:
Implementation Support for Partners
We understand that account based pricing requires additional effort from our Partners. We want to help ease this transition by providing implementation support to our Partners. We will apply a one-time credit to cover part or all of your September 15th invoice up to $10,000 USD. For complete detail on our implementation support program, including all eligibility requirements, please contact your Account Manager.

WHMCS Automates Billing for New Licensing Model
If you are an existing WHMCS customer, we will only make the new cPanel & WHM hosting pricing model effective once the new WHMCS functionality is available to support the new pricing model. You will continue to be charged at the current pricing rate until 30 days after the release of this new functionality.

If you are not yet a WHMCS customer, and the billing functionality would help your business implement the new cPanel & WHM hosting pricing model, we are providing up to 12 months of no cost WHMCS licensing to our Partners. Please contact your Account Manager for details.

Introducing cPanel Plus Cloud (50 Account Package)
We will add a new 50 account “Plus” package available at Partner pricing for $25/month USD to our Cloud offering for customers who aren’t quite ready for a 100 account+ Premier license.

Fixed Price Packages
We will provide fixed cPanel Premier Packages starting with 100 account licenses, and we are making additional packages available in 50 account increments (i.e., 150, 200, 250, etc.) for customers where auto-scaling is not a good fit. To avoid a disadvantage in comparison to auto-scale pricing, we are offering these fixed price packages at a discount. Please be aware that no further discounts apply to the fixed price packages.

* Each additional 50 accounts above 250 adds $5.00/month in licensing cost. Pricing in USD.

We Only Get Paid When You Get Paid
After implementing the new pricing structure, if your customer fails to pay for their cPanel license, Partners will be able to request a service credit for up to 1 month via Manage2 on a license by license basis. We only get paid if you get paid. Please contact your Account Manager for details.

For Direct Customers
Reinstating cPanel Solo Licenses
By the end of this week, we will reinstate cPanel Solo licenses (Cloud) in the cPanel Store. They will be available at $15/month on Cloud only. Additionally, we will no longer convert existing cPanel Solo licenses to the Admin package.

Extending Yearly Licenses
We are automatically extending all yearly licenses to help with the transition to the new licensing model. For licenses expiring between June 27th and July 20th, 2019, we will give additional time to select a new option in the ‘Managed Licenses” area in the cPanel Store. Please complete your selection no later than July 21, 2019.

Simplified Partner Application Process
The cPanel Store is in the process of being remodeled. We want to simplify the process of becoming a Partner. The cPanel Store release scheduled for August 2019 will provide a dramatic improvement on the process to become a Partner. Keep an eye out for this important change. Customers with a large number of accounts that meet Partner requirements will see a significant discount on our new pricing with Bulk accounts starting a 0.10 USD per account.

Reduced Partner Requirements for Developing Economies
In addition to a simplified partner application process, as described above, we are also lowering the financial requirements to become a Partner for companies in developing economies. We are reducing the minimum monthly spend from $500 to $200 for qualified companies located in developing economies*.

I haven't used Cpanel from the moment I switched to Centmin Mod. Several years ago, instead of multiple VPSs, I go with a dedicated server which helped to save $$$ on Cpanel license. Now I go with multiple VPS, so I can config them meet my needs and Centmin Mod is FREE . These changes from Cpanel may be an opportunity for others, some hosting providers offer free DA licenses, and cheap hosting providers may switch to other alternatives.

Most of the SQL queries I saw were escaped / sanitized although admittedly it was a brief once over so there probably are some lingering injections... we sent them a blunt 60 page PDF report full of exploits. #shrugs

Security Auditing of Alternative / Open Source Control Panels

Some folks are asking themselves and thinking - Centmin Mod is different in there is no GUI control and it's not marketed as a shared hosting control panel alternate to cPanel with chroot/jailed isolated non-root user accounts. So Patrick's criteria for exploits and vulnerabilities would include factors not applicable to Centmin Mod i.e. a shared hosting account user separate from root user being able to elevate their non-root user permissions to do root user level tasks i.e. mess with server configuration and operation or access other shared hosting users' data/files. Or recently fixed CyberPanel CVE-2019-13056 which allows a hacker to take over the entire server just by tricking admin to visit a malicious web site.

Pretty big reason as to why Centmin Mod doesn't have a web GUI interface - so many potential vectors for attacks, vulnerabilities and compromises !

Hello

So after the cPanel price hike, many people requested a security review of CyberPanel from Patrick (rack911labs). 2 days ago he sent us a detailed report of the issues in CyberPanel.

So we started working on fixing them. Just to clear some confusions.

Some people think that CyberPanel runs as root or sudo user because some commands use sudo in them. CyberPanel itself does not run as root or sudo user, however, since it is an old code sudo still remains as part of some commands.

So for functions that require root escalation CyberPanel contact LSCPD daemon which runs as root (it is a modified version of OpenLiteSpeed) which then runs the commands. However some functions can be run not as root, we have reviewed and adjusted in this release. LSCPD can drop privileges to run those commands.

For communication, UDS socket is used with an authorization token.

There was input sanitization earlier as well but it turns out to be not enough. Sanitization was not at function level it was performed using DJANGO middleware. But it is much better now.

We've thoroughly gone through the mentioned issues and produced quick release to address those issues. Summary of what we've done

All the functions available to normal users that require shell now run as that user by passing external app user to drop privileges through LSCPD.

Strong sanitization.

Some functions are further split where root escalation is required they are then called with root privileges.

We have just released the version, due to major changes there might be minor bugs here and there, but we can quickly fix them as soon as something is pointed out.

For MySQL CyberPanel uses DJANGO ORM. There are some instances where raw queries are used, but they are looked out for.

Since this is a quick release to cover the majority of things they discovered (we are very thankful for that). We will dig deeper to do more thorough reviews. Any feedback is appreciated and we'll try to fix ASAP. Meanwhile, we encourage everyone to upgrade to this safer version.

We also thank the great community support, that really motivates us to make CyberPanel better and more secure.

Finally, much thanks to Rack911labs. Will further reach out to Rack911labs for further review of changes to make sure everything is in the right order.

As part of my paid work with clients I deal with other control panels like cPanel but due to this price hike, some are migrating to Centmin Mod and some are migrating to DirectAdmin. This means I need to learn the ropes for DirectAdmin. So decided to create a new blog site using Centmin Mod 123.09beta01's centmin.sh menu option 22 work installer dedicated to reviews/news and guides for various control panels I will play with and learn.

I have been working at cPanel full-time for more than 3 years

Pros

Has been a great company to join and be a part of, but new investor appetite for payout increase appears to be ending badly.

Cons

Management team seem powerless to stop the forced price changes. I know multiple staff who are actively looking for other work in secret. Even internal communication is gloomy. This is likely the end for this great company and I think it is very shortsighted - but I don't have access to upper management strategy reasons - other than guessing this is being driven by investors.

Advice to Management

Please stop and listen to your customers. Price change is of course acceptable when done in the right way, to help sustain our business and to increase staff salary and infrastructure costs - but the price change amounts recently announced are extremely unpopular with the entire hosting community... our ticket queue is unbelievable in length and the negatively and vitriol is something I've never seen before..... it's hard to understand how we could recover from this. These price changes I think will lead to severe reduction in customers and that will mean the business revenues will suffer, along with staff layoffs. Please do something to mitigate this disaster. I am writing this review anonymously to protect myself - but I think I speak for many people within the business.

Yeah I am so glad I put in the effort I did to evolve Centmin Mod to what it is right now so as to not be reliant on other control panels and LEMP/LAMP stack offerings. This has been more evident while learning and practicing and using DirectAdmin. Being able to mold Centmin Mod to my exact needs and the way I want things configured and knowing where everything is in Centmin Mod, saves me so much time when setting up a new server I am only scratching the surface for my learning adventures with DirectAdmin - but necessary as I have clients who will either be using cPanel, Centmin Mod or eventually DirectAdmin
