What is the difference between the Comodo Positive SSL and Essential SSL certificates? Can I use a GoGetSSL "Domain SSL" certificate to use with RSA-2048 now and switch to ECC-256 later without having to buy another certificate?

I just need a non-wildcard certificate with the most forward compatibility, but it's hard to understand the nuances between the different options available.

For ECC 256 bit vs RSA 2048 bit SSL certificates read SSL - ECC 256 bit vs RSA 2048 bit SSL | Centmin Mod Community You should be able to switch between them with the same single SSL certificate by reissuing the SSL certificate and providing them with a newly generated CSR code either generated CSR via ECC 256 bit or RSA 2048 bit SSL.

Comodo is only option for ECC that is relatively cheap (GGSSL is also Comodo and supports ECC 256 bit). Symantec is the other SSL provider that supports ECC 256 bit but on average much more expensive.

I'd just go with Comodo Positive SSL for non-wildcard SSL.
