CDN Cloudflare Cloudflare now HTTPS/2

Just got a notice from Cloudflare this morning that my site was switched to HTTPS/2. It's much faster! Note: it's a cpanel server, haven't made the switch to centminmod yet (at the end of the month).

One of my cloudflare protected sites also just switched to HTTP/2 too

I'm noticing a nice speed improvement. Should be really fast once I get everything moved over to Centminmod.

PHP7, Cloudflare HTTPS/2... what's next? Free flights to Hawaii?

Keep an eye on Centmin Mod 123.09 betas which have added support for ngx_brotli compression module, it compresses better than gzip so your web pages, css, js all will be anywhere between 10-40% smaller than they are now. Only activates on HTTPS and with Firefox 44+ see caniuse.com/#feat=brotli.

There's also proposals for Google Quic Google Wants To Speed Up The Web With Its QUIC Protocol | TechCrunch which would be awesome to have too

QUIC is Google’s experimental, low-latency Internet transportation protocol over UDP, a protocol that is often used by gaming, streaming media and VoIP services. The name ‘QUIC’ stands for Quick UDP Internet Connection.

On a typical secure TCP connection, it typically takes two or three round-trips before the browser can actually start receiving data. Using QUIC, a browser can immediately start talking to a server it has talked to before. QUIC also introduces a couple of new features like congestion control and automatic re-transmission, making it more reliable that pure UDP.

With SPDY, which later became the basis for the HTTP/2 standard, Google already developed another alternative protocol that had many of the same goals as QUIC, but HTTP/2 still runs over TCP and still runs into some of the same latency cost.

Looks like Cloudflare is working on enabling HTTP/2 server push too which is currently disabled in Nginx's HTTP/2 module HTTP/2 is here! Goodbye SPDY? Not quite yet

The HTTP/2 specification is focused on improving the browser behavior at this point. Therefore we do not support SPDY or HTTP/2 between origin server and CloudFlare at this point. Instead we will always use HTTP/1.x. With this, it is not necessary to make any modifications to the origin for enabling HTTP/2 or SPDY.

Optionally you can use Railgun to achieve similar benefits to HTTP/2 or SPDY between your origin and CloudFlare.

Good news next year Cloudflare plans to open source release their Nginx patch which reintroduces SPDY/3.1 support into Nginx 1.9.5+ so that you can run both SPDY/3.1 and HTTP/2 HTTP/2 is here! Goodbye SPDY? Not quite yet

NGINX ripped out their SPDY support when they added HTTP/2. We worked to patch support back in. The two protocols aren't mutually exclusive. Google, for instance, also supports HTTP/2 for browsers that support it but falls back to SPDY for those that don't. We plan on open sourcing our NGINX patch to support HTTP/2 and SPDY in the new year.

right now SPDY/3.1 adoption rate is still higher than HTTP/2 Can I use... Support tables for HTML5, CSS3, etc

The short answer is that the caniuse.com data is wrong. For global, non-bot traffic, the protocol support is roughly:

HTTP/2: 30%
SPDY: 50%
HTTP/1.1: 20%

We expect that SPDY will tail off over the next 24 months and HTTP/2 will grow. However, SPDY has been actively supported since 2012. There are a lot of difficult to upgrade Android phones with SPDY but not HTTP/2 that have been made in the last 3 years that will take a while to work their way out of the system.

To clearly illustrate the performance gains of HTTP/2, 200 image tiles are requested in a short amount of time. A single large image was split up into 200 40x40 tiles with an image processing library called ImageMagick using the following command:
