Interesting topic. Is it time to say goodbye to CentOS? : CentOS
So it is indeed a political decision because everyone is already using version 7 and nobody has version 8. That obviously doesn't matter. But COMMUNICATE THIS!!! Is it really that hard to post this message? Month ago or something Johnny Hughes from the CentOS team on CentOS 8:
Centos' has been the 'go to' open-source OS because it supports legacy software development demanded of many slow-moving smaller enterprise and individual users. It has never been the vanguard of leading edge performance. Its slowness is what many of the clients want... slow and predictable. The OS field has been evolving toward greater virtualization and specific application's performance vs. universality. In saying that, the virtualization of the OS and the environments we run them on has shifted the role of the OS to a modular container that must fit within the cloud hosting world. Centminmod is an orchestrated software stack that has become less congruent with Centos as the pace of optimized OS has accelerated. If you want to build a stack to optimize performance of Wordpress, Centos is no longer the best choice from a performance standpoint. It may not be the best choice going forward from a 'well supported' standpoint... or that advantage no longer holds as much weight. I think the role Centminmod plays is needed in the virtualized OS that may increasingly be ruled by open-source supported by companies like Intel and Facebook. In a few years time, the OS's may be more determined by the mobile network operators, MNOs, as the 5G and beyond Gigabit wireless unfolds. I don't know how well Centos will be positioned because they are chained to the legacy users who are not going to push for the advances that will come from the new environment. Centos will likely be around for decades but may not be what performance hungry developers use.
CentOS 8 might change that from benchmarks of RHEL8 that Phoronix reported it holds it own against Ubuntu 19.x as well. But like @buik has highlighted getting to CentOS 8 may take more time with CentOS 7.7 being a priority first. Personally, I am in no rush for CentOS 8 as Centmin Mod still needs alot of testing and investigation into CentOS 8 before it is ready for Centmin Mod anyway. Like CentOS 7/Centmin Mod testing, good things always come to those that wait - well most of the time
Rush is rarely good. And if you do, you can always start the Centmin Mod EL8 test phase because Oracle Linux 8 is already released and binary compatible. Nevertheless this rush is classic:
The next version of #CentOS is being released September 24 and will be announced in all the usual places.
actually that tweet could be referring to CentOS 7.7 release not 8.0 edit ok they're referring to CentOS 8 About/Building 8 - CentOS Wiki
Properly CentOS 7.7. CentOS 7.7 is synced to the mirrors. CentOS 8 seems to be removed on the main-mirror. CentOS 8 dir was around 35 GB.
Update, reboot and then run: cat /etc/centos-release Then we will know Can't see anything like that on my servers ...
