Xeon E3-1270 v6 or Xeon E5-1650 v3

    Hey guys,

    I have here a situation with a new server im going to buy at OVH.

    For the same price, one with the 1270v6 and the other with 1650v3 (everything else the same).

    The only benchmark i found was Geekbench.

    The 1270v6 gets 4610 in single core and 16059 in multi core.
    The 1650v3 gets 4099 in single core and 19627 in multi core.

    So, most of the time the 1270v6 will be faster, but the 1650v3 will get that edge when the 12 threads are pushed hard in peak times of the day. Or im getting this wrong and the 1650v3 will always be faster?

    What would you choose?

    What are you going to use the server for?
    And do you have peaks for which you need a specific CPU?

    I have no experience with OVH on the dedicated side and never rented in private or on the private market but have experience with business providers and suppliers.

    The 1650v3 is about 4 years old.
    What I have seen in the wild, is that systems are delivered with 4-year-old disks including hardware
    with non redundant and single power supply. That is not what you want when they are constantly on.

    I don't know if that applies to OVH, and I always want an age of systems before I approve it, but if you don't have a peak load then opt for the 1270v6.

    @bassie thanks for the response.

    Most of the time, it does not have a high peak. Currently, with a E3 1245v2, normally load is between 2.0 and 3.0. To be fair, the real reason for moving to a new server is because of the Bandwidth upgrade.

    You might be right about the 4 year old cpu comes with a 4 year old ssd.

    1270v6 is almost 5 years newer than the 1245v2.

    If the 1245v2 is running fine, without peaks the 1270v6 should do the job at least as good, if not much better. Given the fact that the CPU is much (not only purchase date but also technology) newer and both CPU's have the same Cores / Threads.

    Beside the new 1270v6 does have faster PBF of GHz.

    But of course I can not formally test nor confirm this.

    My advice take the 1270v6.
