A newly discovered bug in Windows 10’s scheduler has been found to be negatively affecting performance of AMD Ryzen CPUs. The bug has been confirmed to affect all Windows 10 versions but not Windows 7. It’s not clear yet if Windows 8.1 is affected.

Not All Threads Are Created Equal
Windows 10′ scheduler correctly identifies Intel’s hyper-threads as lesser performing than principal core threads and schedules tasks in a way that’s takes advantage of the additional throughput without negatively impacting performance. Unfortunately the scheduler currently is not able to differentiate principal core threads from virtual SMT threads with Ryzen and in fact sees 16 thread Ryzen 7 processors as processors with 16 physical cores with equal resources per thread.

Because it does not give any preferential prioritization of scheduling tasks to primary threads over SMT threads like it does on Intel platforms, a massively larger percentage of tasks can and do end up getting scheduled for a virtual SMT thread rather than a principal core thread. Resulting in significant artificial performance degradation.

Someone took a look at ECC memory on AMD Ryzen 7 ECC Memory & AMD's Ryzen - A Deep Dive

One of the more interesting aspects of the pre- and post-Ryzen launch was how many people were wondering about support for ECC memory, otherwise known as error-correcting code memory. Every forum had at least one thread and most articles with a comments section had people talking about this relatively rare feature. It all started when leaks and then online product pages for AM4 motherboards appeared, since their specifications lists showed support for both ECC and non-ECC DDR4 memory.

The reason that ECC is much more popular among AMD consumers is that it's a feature that the company has never blocked. While Intel artificially limits ECC support to pricey Xeon processors or low-end Pentium models that no one would ever use for serious work, AMD have always quietly supported ECC memory. It might not be advertised, and it's certainly not validated, but it's been there on AM1/AM2/AM3 platforms for the adventurous to make use of and there's a die-hard contingent that do.

The release notes for the upcoming version of AIDA64 Extreme don't offer many details, but what's there is intriguing. The notes declare that AIDA64 will have "preliminary support for AMD Zen 12-core and 16-core HEDT CPUs." It's fun to think about how such chips might pose a challenge to Intel's Core i7-6950X and Core i7-5960X in the high-end desktop and workstation spaces.

yzen shows a significant dependence on the speed of its memory. Faster memory obviously means that there is more bandwidth, but there's a less obvious advantage on Zen chips: internally, the chip is organized as two blocks of four cores, and the communication between these blocks of four cores runs at the memory clock speed. Make the memory clock faster by going from, say, 2400MHz RAM (on a 1200MHz clock) to 3200MHz RAM (on a 1600MHz clock) and not only does the memory bandwidth go up by fifty percent, but so too does the bandwidth between the two blocks of cores.

Unfortunately, getting Ryzen to run consistently and reliably with high-speed memory has proven challenging, with different motherboards, firmwares, and memory manufacturers showing very different results.

AMD has a microcode update that it says should reduce memory latency across the board, and as the processor and motherboard firmware matures, getting high memory speeds should be more reliable. With Zen's unusually high dependence on the memory speed, enabling those high speeds consistently can only be a good thing.

AMD Naples Project Olympus OCP Server Motherboard

Recently we were at OCP Summit 2017 and had the opportunity to see more progress on the AMD Naples platform first hand. AMD Naples is a highly anticipated server platform from AMD that is set to challenge Intel Xeon dominance in the x86 2P market later this year. As far as we are aware, there have only been two AMD Naples platforms publicly shown to date and we have pictures of both plus a block diagram showing how the 128 lanes of high-speed I/O are implemented in an example Naples platform. While headlines of 128 PCIe 3.0 lanes for the platform are attention grabbing, realistically many of the I/O lanes will be used for other system I/O purposes. The block diagram shows how these platform I/O needs can be met with 112 PCIe lanes available to PCIe cards, NVMe drives and etc.

Yeah .. tiny boards!

re-read benchmarks for lower end AMD Ryzen 1600X and 6 cpu / 12 threads seems to stack up very nicely to Intel Core i7 7700K even for multi-threaded testings ! Though AMD has to sort out memory clock speed scaling for memory bandwidth though.
